Disconnecting the 12 V battery on your Subaru Forester (2019–present) — the SK — for a new battery, winter storage, or work near the airbags is a straightforward job. The battery is in the engine bay.
Find the Battery First
The 12 V battery is in the engine compartment, under a cover. On the e-Boxer mild hybrid there is also a high-voltage battery (under the boot floor) — never touch the orange high-voltage cabling; you only ever work on the 12 V.
Disconnecting Safely
- Switch everything off.
- Disconnect the negative (−) terminal first, then the positive.
- Working near airbags or seat-belt pretensioners? Wait a couple of minutes after disconnecting before such work.
Reconnecting and Re-initialising
Reconnect positive first, then negative. The Forester then needs a few items settling:
- Power windows — if one-touch is lost, hold the switch fully up/down at the limits to relearn.
- Steering-angle / EyeSight assistance settle after a short drive on a clear road.
- Re-enter the clock and presets.
If Something Isn’t Right Afterwards
- Warning lights usually clear once the relearns complete after a short drive.

- Fit a like-for-like battery of the correct spec.
