Disconnecting the 12 V battery on your Subaru BRZ (2012–2019) — the ZC6 — for a new battery, winter storage, or work near the airbags is a straightforward job. The battery is in the engine bay.
Find the Battery First
The 12 V battery is in the engine compartment, under a cover. The BRZ uses a small, light battery as standard — replace it with the correct equivalent. Note your radio presets before you start.
Disconnecting Safely
- Switch everything off.
- Disconnect the negative (−) terminal first, then the positive.
- Working near airbags or seat-belt pretensioners? Wait a couple of minutes after disconnecting before such work.
Reconnecting and Re-initialising
Reconnect positive first, then negative. The BRZ then needs a few items settling:
- Power windows — if one-touch is lost, hold the switch fully up/down at the limits to relearn.
- Steering-angle / stability settle after a short drive.
- Re-enter the clock and presets; the engine may idle slightly differently until it relearns.
If Something Isn’t Right Afterwards
- Warning lights usually clear once the relearns complete after a short drive.
