Reset the Service Indicator

After an oil-and-filter change on your Smart Fortwo (W453, 2015–2024), the service indicator needs resetting so the ‘ASSYST’ countdown starts again. It is a maintenance reminder, not a fault — the car keeps a service counter and prompts you when it runs down. You can do it yourself from the instrument-cluster menu — no tool needed.

What the ASSYST Service Indicator Means

The Fortwo’s ASSYST system keeps track of the gap to the next service and displays a maintenance symbol, often with the remaining distance or time, when a service falls due. It is a reminder that servicing is needed, not a sign that anything has failed — the car drives exactly as normal. Because the counter is driven by distance and elapsed time rather than a live measurement of the oil, it keeps counting whether or not the oil has actually been changed, so it has to be reset by hand after each service.

It is easy to tell the service reminder apart from a genuine warning. The ASSYST prompt is neutral and clears once reset; a red light, or an amber light for a named system such as engine or oil pressure, is a fault that a service reset will not touch. If you are not sure which you are seeing, note the exact symbol before doing anything else.

Getting Ready

  • Do the oil and filter change first — resetting only clears the reminder.
  • This works the same on monochrome and colour instrument displays.
  • Park on level ground and apply the parking brake before you begin.
  • No tools are needed — the whole job is done from the cluster with the ignition on and the engine off.

Resetting the Service Indicator

  1. Close the bonnet and all the doors.
  2. Turn the ignition key to position ‘1’ (ignition on, engine off).
  3. Press the cluster menu button repeatedly until the standard display appears.
  4. Use the same button to select the ‘Messages and service’ menu.
  5. Press and hold the reset/select button — the maintenance symbol flashes.
  6. Keep holding for about 20 seconds until the service interval resets.
  7. The display now shows the remaining km/time to the next service. Turn the key to ‘0’.

If the Reset Doesn’t Take

  • Hold the button long enough — it needs the full 20 seconds.
  • Bonnet and doors must be closed for the menu to behave.
  • Check the key position — the key should be at ‘1’ (ignition on) with the engine off, not started.
  • Reach the right menu — you must be in ‘Messages and service’ before holding the reset button.
  • Cycle the ignition and repeat — turn the key back to ‘0’, wait a few seconds and run through the steps again.
  • A wrench/spanner warning that won’t clear can store a code — look it up on autodtcs.com.

What Happens Next

Once the hold completes, the maintenance symbol stops flashing and the display shows a full interval again — the remaining distance or time to the next service. Nothing else on the car changes; your trip data and settings are untouched. From there the ASSYST counter simply begins counting down towards the next service.

How Often It Comes Up

Reset the indicator once after every scheduled service, straight after the oil and filter have been changed. How often a service falls due depends on how the car is used and which engine it has, so follow the schedule in your owner’s handbook rather than a remembered mileage. The ASSYST prompt is a convenience reminder, not a replacement for that schedule.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I reset the service light on a Smart Fortwo W453?

Ignition to ‘1’, open the ‘Messages and service’ menu, then hold the reset button about 20 seconds.

Do I need a diagnostic tool?

No — the service reset is done entirely from the cluster menu.

Does it differ between display types?

No — the steps are the same on monochrome and colour displays.

Will it reset if I haven’t changed the oil?

It will, but only do it after the service — the reminder is there to protect the engine.

Why does the maintenance symbol flash while I hold the button?

That is normal — the flashing shows the reset is in progress. Keep holding until it stops and the interval shows full, which takes about 20 seconds.

Do the doors and bonnet really have to be shut?

Yes — with everything closed the cluster stays on its normal display so the menu and reset behave correctly. An open door or bonnet can interrupt the sequence.

If a service-related warning stays on, decode the code on autodtcs.com.
