After an oil-and-filter change on your Smart Forfour (W453, 2014–2021), the service indicator needs resetting so the ‘ASSYST’ countdown starts again. You can do it yourself from the instrument-cluster menu — no tool needed.
Before You Start
- Do the oil and filter change first — resetting only clears the reminder.
- This works the same on monochrome and colour instrument displays.
Resetting the Service Indicator
- Close the bonnet and all the doors.
- Turn the ignition key to position ‘1’ (ignition on, engine off).
- Press the cluster menu button repeatedly until the standard display appears.
- Use the same button to select the ‘Messages and service’ menu.
- Press and hold the reset/select button — the maintenance symbol flashes.
- Keep holding for about 20 seconds until the service interval resets.
- The display now shows the remaining km/time to the next service. Turn the key to ‘0’.
If the Reset Doesn’t Take
- Hold the button long enough — it needs the full 20 seconds.
- Bonnet and doors must be closed for the menu to behave.
