After an oil change on your Cadillac CTS (2014–2019), the Oil Life service indicator needs resetting so the countdown starts again. You can do it yourself — the method depends on whether your car has the multifunction display. The message is a maintenance reminder, not a fault: it tells you the Oil Life System has counted down to zero and the oil needs changing, after which the monitor should be reset.
What the Oil Life Light Means
The CTS uses the GM Oil Life System, which is condition-based rather than a simple fixed-distance countdown. Instead of just counting miles, it estimates how much useful life remains in the oil from how the engine has been driven — things like engine temperature, revs and running time — and displays the result as a remaining percentage. When that percentage falls to zero, a Change Engine Oil Soon or Oil Life message appears to tell you a change is due.
Because the system works on an estimate, it has no way of sensing that fresh oil has actually been added. It keeps its calculated figure until you reset it, so resetting is what tells the monitor to start a new 100% cycle after the change. Resetting the indicator does not change the oil or alter anything mechanical — it only restarts the monitor. If you change the oil but never reset, the reminder stays at or near zero; if you reset without changing the oil, the car will happily count down from full on old oil, which is why the reset should always follow the actual service.
Before You Start
- Only reset after the oil has actually been changed — the monitor is an estimate, not a check that the work was done.
- Park on level ground, apply the parking brake and put the transmission in P.
- For the pedal method you need the ignition on with the engine off; do not start the engine.
- No tools or scan tool are required — both methods are done from the driver’s seat.
Method 1 — Accelerator Pedal
- Turn the ignition on but do not start the engine.
- Within 5 seconds, press and release the accelerator pedal 5 times.
- The warning light goes out — the indicator is reset.
Method 2 — Multifunction Display
- Scroll the driver display until ‘Oil Life System’ appears.
- Press and hold the reset button until the system resets.
If the Reset Doesn’t Take
- Don’t start the engine during the pedal method — ignition on only.
- Keep within 5 seconds for the five pedal presses; press each one fully to the floor and release cleanly.
- If the pedal method doesn’t respond, switch the ignition off, wait a few seconds, switch on again and repeat the five presses promptly.
- For the menu method, make sure you are on the Oil Life item before holding the button, and hold until the value returns to 100%.
- A service light that won’t clear can store a code — look it up on autodtcs.com.
What to Expect After Resetting
Once the reset succeeds, the Change Engine Oil / Oil Life message clears and the remaining oil life returns to 100%. From there the system begins a fresh cycle, counting the percentage down again based on how you drive. If a separate warning — check engine, low oil pressure or a coloured lamp — is showing, that is a different issue and is not addressed by this reset.
How Often to Reset It
Reset the Oil Life monitor every time the oil is changed, right after the work is finished, so the estimate tracks the new oil. Because the system is condition-based, the interval between changes will vary with how the car is driven rather than landing on the same mileage each time; many owners also change the oil at least once a year regardless of the percentage. Follow the maintenance schedule in your owner’s handbook and reset the monitor to 100% at each change.
Frequently Asked Questions
How do I reset the oil life light on a Cadillac CTS?
Ignition on (engine off), press the accelerator 5 times within 5 seconds — or use the Oil Life System menu.

Do I need a tool?
No — both methods are done from the driver’s seat, with no scanner or app.
Which method should I use?
The pedal method works on any CTS; the menu method needs the multifunction display. If the pedal method fails to respond, try the menu, and vice versa.
Should I reset before or after the oil change?
After — the indicator monitors oil life and should be reset to 100% once the fresh oil is in.
What does the Oil Life percentage actually measure?
It is an estimate of remaining oil life based on how the engine has been driven, not a direct reading of oil condition. At 0% a change is due; resetting sets it back to 100%.
The message came back after I reset it — why?
Usually the sequence wasn’t completed — the engine was started during the pedal method, or the five presses weren’t within 5 seconds. Switch off, switch back on with the engine off, and repeat.
