If the touchscreen in your Škoda Scala (Mk1, NW1, 2019–Present) has frozen, gone black, or stopped responding to taps, you can force a reboot yourself in under a minute — no tools, no garage.
Which system is in your Scala
The Scala was, alongside the Kamiq, one of the first VW Group cars to launch on the MIB3 infotainment generation. By trim you have the entry Swing radio, the 8-inch Bolero, or the 9.2-inch Amundsen navigation unit — there is no Columbus in the Scala. On Swing and Bolero the display is flanked by two rotary knobs; the left knob switches the unit on and off (press) and sets volume (turn). The 9.2-inch Amundsen drops the physical knobs for a touch control area below the glass. A black screen, a frozen map, or a unit stuck on the ŠKODA logo is almost always a software lock-up, not a hardware fault.
Soft reset (reboot) the screen
Do this parked, ignition on, so the unit stays powered. The owner’s handbook lists this as the fix for “Infotainment not responding”.
- Find the on/off control: the left rotary knob on Swing and Bolero, or the power/mute area of the touch panel on Amundsen.
- Press and hold that control for more than 10 seconds.
- Keep holding until the screen goes black and the ŠKODA logo appears — that confirms the restart has begun.
- Release and wait for the restart to complete; the home screen reloads in about 30–60 seconds and touch and audio return.
Safe — no data loss
The reboot is the equivalent of restarting a phone. It does not erase radio presets, navigation favourites, paired phones, or settings. The unit simply reloads its software, so you can do it as often as you need.
If it stays frozen
- Hold a little longer. If a 10-second hold did nothing, try again and keep the on/off control pressed past the point the screen blanks.
- Let it sleep. Switch the ignition off, lock the car with the key, and walk away for about five minutes so the electronics power down; then unlock and restart.
- Check for a software update. As an early MIB3 launch car, the Scala saw several firmware fixes for freezes and Bluetooth drops; Amundsen updates over the air, while Bolero takes a USB update from Škoda’s update portal.
- Pull the fuse (last resort). If nothing else works, removing the infotainment fuse for about 10 seconds force-cuts power. Check the fuse chart in your handbook first.
Factory reset (erases data)
A factory reset is separate from the reboot and only worth doing if you are selling the car or chasing a deep, persistent glitch. On the Scala it lives with the other basic settings — open the Settings menu and choose Restore factory settings. It erases presets, paired phones, and saved destinations, so only do it deliberately.
Frequently Asked Questions
My Amundsen Scala has no volume knob — how do I reboot it?
On the 9.2-inch Amundsen there are no rotary knobs. Press and hold the power/mute area of the touch panel below the screen for more than 10 seconds until the ŠKODA logo appears. Swing and Bolero cars use the left rotary knob instead.
Will I lose my saved radio stations?
No. The reboot keeps presets, navigation favourites, and paired phones. Only a deliberate factory reset from the menu clears them.
The digital assistant Laura stopped responding — will a reboot help?
Yes. Laura and the online services run on the same head unit, so holding the on/off control to restart clears a stuck voice assistant along with a frozen screen.
Is it safe to drive with the screen frozen?
Yes. The infotainment unit is independent of the engine and driving systems — you only lose audio, Bluetooth, and navigation. Reboot when you are safely parked.
Does the Scala have wireless SmartLink?
Yes, on Bolero and Amundsen. If wireless Android Auto or CarPlay drops out, a quick reboot usually restores it without re-pairing.
If a warning light or fault message stays on the dash after the reboot, the car may have stored a diagnostic trouble code — you can look it up on autodtcs.com.
