If the large central display in your Toyota C-HR (Mk2/SG, 2023–Present) has frozen — stuck on the map, ignoring touch, or showing a black screen — you can almost always clear it yourself in under a minute. The second-generation C-HR runs a modern cloud-connected system, and a forced reboot resolves a software hang without erasing your settings.
Which System Your C-HR Has
The Mk2 C-HR uses Toyota Smart Connect — the cloud-based multimedia platform with built-in cloud navigation, voice assistant (“Hey Toyota”), wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, and over-the-air (OTA) updates. The display is either 8-inch or 12.3-inch depending on grade. Because it is a much newer, more capable system than the old Touch 2, freezes are rarer — but like any connected computer it can occasionally hang, usually after a dropped data connection or an interrupted update.
Soft Reset (Reboot the Screen)
- Keep the car switched on (Ready/ignition on), preferably parked.
- Press and hold the Power/Volume control for the multimedia system for about 10 to 15 seconds.
- Hold until the display goes black and the Toyota logo reappears.
- Release and wait — Smart Connect reloads in roughly 30 seconds and returns to the home screen.
Safe — No Data Lost
The reboot is non-destructive. Your profile, paired phones, navigation history, voice settings and home/work locations are all retained — the long press simply restarts the multimedia computer. Nothing is wiped, so use it freely whenever the screen misbehaves.
If It Stays Frozen
- Hold the control the full 15–20 seconds if the logo doesn’t appear right away.
- Switch the car fully off, lock it, and walk away for 5 minutes. Letting it sleep cuts power to the unit and clears a stubborn hang.
- Check for an over-the-air update. Smart Connect downloads software and map updates automatically when connected; an interrupted update is a common freeze cause, and completing it usually settles things. You can also check in Settings for a pending update.
- Re-establish the data connection — cloud navigation and voice rely on connectivity, and a poor signal can make the system appear stuck.
Factory Reset (Erases Data)
Reserve this for persistent instability. Go to Settings → General → Factory reset (also shown as Delete personal data). This removes your profile, pairings, favourites and logins and returns Smart Connect to its out-of-the-box state, so always try the reboot and an update first.
Frequently Asked Questions
Does Smart Connect freeze as much as the old C-HR system?
No. The Mk2’s Smart Connect is a far newer platform and freezes far less than the first-generation Touch 2. Most hangs trace back to connectivity drops or an interrupted OTA update rather than the buggy behaviour of the old unit.
Will a reboot delete my profile or saved places?
No. Holding the Power/Volume control just restarts the system. Your profile, saved locations and pairings survive — only a factory reset erases them.
Can an over-the-air update fix recurring freezes?
Often, yes. Because Smart Connect updates over the air, letting a pending software or map update finish frequently resolves repeat freezing. Keep the car connected and check Settings for updates.
Why did wireless CarPlay drop when the screen froze?
A frozen system also drops the wireless CarPlay/Android Auto link. After the reboot it reconnects automatically; if not, re-select your phone in the Bluetooth menu.
Is the reboot safe to do anytime?
Yes, though best done parked. The screen blanks for about 30 seconds during the restart, which removes the camera and map temporarily.
