Home/Honda/HR-V/Mk2 (RU) 2015-2022/Reset a Frozen Infotainment Screen

Reset a Frozen Infotainment Screen

These instructions apply to the Honda HR-V Mk2 (RU) 2015-2022. For other models, please choose your vehicle here.

Last updated: June 10, 2026

If the touchscreen in your Honda HR-V (Mk2/RU, 2015–2022) — the Vezel in some markets — has frozen, gone black, or stopped responding to taps, you can force the unit to reboot yourself in under a minute, with no tools, no dealer visit, and without losing any of your settings.

Which screen the Mk2 HR-V uses

The second-generation HR-V uses Honda’s 7-inch Display Audio capacitive touchscreen on mid and upper trims. It is from the same early all-touch generation that drew complaints across the Honda range: there is no physical volume knob, just a touch slider, and the unit is well known for lag and occasional freezes when pairing Bluetooth, switching sources or loading media. A frozen screen is a software lock-up — the engine, climate and driving systems keep working while only the display sticks. The fix is a software reboot held from the power/audio control.

Soft reset (reboot) the screen

Leave the engine running or the ignition ON so the unit stays powered.

  1. Locate the Power / Audio control (the on-screen or hard power control for the audio system).
  2. Press and hold it.
  3. Keep holding for about 5–10 seconds until the screen goes black and the Honda logo reappears.
  4. If a prompt asks whether to reboot, confirm Yes; otherwise just release.
  5. Wait 30–60 seconds for the home screen to reload before expecting audio and touch to respond.

Safe — it loses no data

This reboot is completely harmless. It does not erase radio presets, paired phones, call history or saved settings — the unit simply reloads its software, exactly like restarting a phone. Repeat it as often as the screen plays up.

If it stays frozen

  • Hold longer. If a short hold did nothing, retry and hold the power control for a full 20–30 seconds.
  • Cycle the ignition fully. Switch off, open the driver’s door, lock the car and walk away for a couple of minutes so the module sleeps, then restart.
  • Pull the audio fuse. With the car off, remove the radio/ACC fuse from the fuse box (check the lid diagram), wait 15–20 seconds and refit it — this hard-cuts power to the head unit.
  • Suspect Bluetooth or USB. Mk2 HR-V freezes often track with a flaky pairing or a worn USB lead — unpair the phone, swap to a known-good cable and re-pair.

Factory reset (erases data)

A factory reset is separate from the reboot and only needed if you are selling the car or chasing a persistent glitch. On the Display Audio unit go to Home/Menu → Settings → System → Factory Data Reset and confirm. It wipes paired phones, call history, presets and all personal settings back to factory defaults, so only do it deliberately.

Frequently Asked Questions

My HR-V has no volume knob — how do I reboot the screen?

The Mk2 HR-V Display Audio uses a touch volume slider, not a knob. Hold the audio Power control for 5–10 seconds until the Honda logo appears — that reboots the unit without any knob. (The later Mk3 HR-V brought a physical volume knob back.)

Why does my Mk2 HR-V screen freeze?

The early Display Audio is an all-capacitive unit with limited processing headroom; lock-ups while pairing Bluetooth or loading media are a known characteristic of this generation, not a fault unique to your car. A quick reboot clears it.

Will rebooting lose my radio presets and paired phone?

No. The press-and-hold reboot keeps every preset, favourite and Bluetooth pairing. Only the Factory Data Reset in the System menu clears them.

Is it safe to drive with the screen frozen?

Yes. The audio/display unit is independent of the engine and brakes — you only lose radio, phone and navigation. Reboot when safely parked.

Where is the audio fuse if I need a hard reset?

Check the fuse-box lid diagram (under the bonnet and behind the dash on the Mk2 HR-V) for the radio/ACC fuse. Pulling it for around 15 seconds with the car off force-restarts the head unit when a button hold will not.

If a warning light or fault message stays on the dash after the reboot, the car may have stored a diagnostic trouble code — you can look it up on autodtcs.com.
