Home/Smart/Fortwo/Mk3 (W453) 2015-2024/Reset a Frozen Infotainment Screen

Reset a Frozen Infotainment Screen

These instructions apply to the Smart Fortwo Mk3 (W453) 2015-2024. For other models, please choose your vehicle here.

Last updated: June 10, 2026

The Smart Fortwo (W453, 2015–2024) uses the Mercedes-derived “Media System” head unit — a compact, Android-based touchscreen that shares its hardware roots with the Renault R-Link platform. It is a capable little system for such a small car, but owners report that it can occasionally freeze: the clock keeps ticking and the radio may keep playing, yet the touchscreen ignores every tap. Before you book a workshop visit, the W453 has a built-in soft-reboot you can trigger from the driver’s seat in seconds.

Which screen your Smart Fortwo has

Two infotainment levels were fitted to the W453 Fortwo. The base “Media System” is the small touchscreen mounted high in the centre of the dash, with a physical home (house icon) button and a rotary volume/power knob beneath it. Higher trims got the “Media System Premium” with built-in navigation, but the reboot procedure is identical because both run on the same underlying unit. If your car instead has only a phone cradle and a smartphone running the Smart cross-connect app, there is no fitted touchscreen to reset — you would simply restart the phone.

Soft reset: reboot the Media System

This is the fix that clears the vast majority of frozen-screen complaints on the W453, and it touches nothing else in the car.

  1. Leave the ignition on (engine running or in the “radio on” position) so the unit stays powered.
  2. Find the home button — the key marked with a small house symbol, to the right of the screen.
  3. Press the home button firmly five times in succession.
  4. The display will go dark and the Media System logo will reappear as the unit reboots. Give it 30–60 seconds to finish loading.

When the home screen returns, touch response is usually restored. If the screen was simply unresponsive after wiping it with a cloth — a known quirk where the touch layer gets confused — this reboot clears that too.

Is it safe? Will I lose anything?

Yes, the five-press home reboot is completely safe. It restarts the software only, the same as power-cycling a phone. Your paired Bluetooth devices, radio presets, navigation favourites (on Premium), and personal settings are all retained. It does not touch the engine, the airbags, or any safety-critical module — the Media System is a standalone comfort unit. There is no risk in trying it as your first step.

If it stays frozen

If the five-press reboot doesn’t wake the screen, work through these in order:

  • Full ignition cycle: switch the car fully off, lock it, walk away for 5–10 minutes, then unlock and restart. This lets the unit power down completely rather than staying in standby.
  • Pull the fuse: the Media System is protected by a fuse in the box inside the glovebox (commonly fuse 26 on the W453 — check your fuse-box lid diagram, as layouts vary by year and market). Pull it, wait one to two minutes, then refit it to force a hard power-down.
  • Disconnect the 12V battery: as a last resort, disconnect the negative battery terminal for about 10 minutes, then reconnect. This is the firmest possible reset short of a dealer visit.
  • Check for a software update: the W453 Media System is known for software-level crashes; a Smart dealer can flash the latest firmware, which fixes many of the chronic freeze and reboot loops.

Factory reset (erases your data)

A factory reset is only needed if the unit boots but misbehaves persistently — corrupt settings, a stuck app, or before selling the car. From the home screen open Settings → System (wording varies slightly by software version) and look for the reset-to-factory-defaults option. This wipes paired phones, saved destinations, favourites, and all personalisation, returning the Media System to as-delivered. Only use it when a plain reboot has failed, and be ready to re-pair your phone and re-enter your presets afterwards.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why does my Smart Fortwo Media System keep freezing? The W453 unit is an early Android-based system with limited processing headroom. Running navigation, Bluetooth audio, and phone mirroring at once, or an outdated firmware build, can overload it. A dealer firmware update is the durable fix if it freezes repeatedly.

Does pressing the home button five times delete my settings? No. It only reboots the software. Presets, paired devices, and favourites all survive.

The screen went dead after I wiped it — is it broken? Often not. Wiping the touch surface, especially with a damp cloth, can momentarily confuse the touch sensor. Do the five-press reboot, or switch off and let the car sit a few minutes.

Which fuse controls the Smart Fortwo Media System? On the W453 it is usually fuse 26 in the glovebox fuse box, but always confirm against the diagram on your fuse-box lid, as positions differ between model years and markets.

Can I update the Media System software myself? There is no straightforward owner-side update for the W453 head unit; the reliable route is a Smart service centre, which can flash the current firmware to cure recurring freezes.

If a warning light appeared alongside the infotainment glitch, you can look up what the stored fault code means at autodtcs.com before deciding whether it needs a workshop.
