Home/Honda/CR-V/Mk5 (RW/RT) 2018-2023/Read the Climate Control Self-Diagnostic Codes

Read the Climate Control Self-Diagnostic Codes

These instructions apply to the Honda CR-V Mk5 (RW/RT) 2018-2023. For other models, please choose your vehicle here.

The Honda CR-V (Mk5/RW·RT, 2018–2023) keeps a hidden self-test inside its climate-control unit. The right button sequence makes the panel run a full HVAC diagnostic, light all its segments, then blink any stored heating/air-conditioning fault codes — with no scan tool and no garage visit. Honda never documented it in the handbook. Here is how to use it on the Mk5 CR-V.

What the Self-Diagnostic Mode Does

The Mk5 CR-V’s dual-zone climate module monitors its own air-mix (temperature blend) motor, mode motor, blower, recirculation flap and temperature sensors. The self-test cycles those actuators, verifies each sensor responds and reports any Diagnostic Trouble Codes (DTCs) by blinking an indicator. It is read-only: it tells you what is wrong without changing a single setting or risking any damage. The full routine is available on the automatic climate control fitted across the Mk5 range.

How to Enter Self-Diagnostic Mode

  1. Park, doors closed. Turn the ignition to LOCK (0), then back to ON (II) — engine off (push-button cars: press START once without the brake to reach ON).
  2. Press and hold the climate ON/OFF button.
  3. Keeping it held, press and release the rear-window defogger button five times within 10 seconds.
  4. Release the ON/OFF button. The unit lights all segments, runs its actuators, then begins blinking.

How to Read the Codes

  • No fault stored: the indicator does not blink.
  • A fault present: it blinks a numbered DTC; with several faults it cycles from the lowest number first.
  • Common areas: air-mix motor circuit, mode (vent-direction) motor, blower motor, evaporator/in-car temperature sensors and control-unit internal faults.
  • Count the blinks — that number is the code to look up.

How to Exit and Clear the Codes

To exit, turn the ignition to LOCK (0). To clear stored codes, fix the fault and re-run the sequence, or disconnect the 12 V battery for a few minutes. Clearing only erases the memory — if the fault is still live it re-logs immediately, so always diagnose the cause first.

Safety Note

This is Honda’s factory self-diagnostic, run stationary with the engine off. The blower and internal flaps move during the test — that is normal. It is completely separate from the engine, airbag and brake systems, so you cannot damage anything by running it. Keep the CR-V parked throughout.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does the hybrid CR-V use the same procedure?

Yes. The climate-control electronics are shared between the petrol and hybrid Mk5 CR-V, so the hold-ON/OFF-then-defogger-five-times sequence is identical.

Why the five defogger presses?

Five presses within 10 seconds is the deliberate unlock pattern the module watches for, telling it to enter the hidden self-test instead of operating the rear-window heater.

Nothing blinked — is my A/C fine?

No blink means no electrical HVAC fault is stored, which is good news. However, low refrigerant or a failing compressor may not log a code, so a clean test does not always mean cold air.

Will running it disturb my dual-zone settings?

The panel may return to default when you exit, but nothing permanent changes. Just reset your driver and passenger temperatures afterwards.

What if the same code returns after clearing?

That means the fault is active, not stale memory. Note the code and address the cause before swapping parts.

Since those flashing numbers are diagnostic trouble codes, you can look up what a specific HVAC or related fault means on autodtcs.com.
