Read the Climate Control Self-Diagnostic Codes

These instructions apply to the Honda HR-V Mk2 (RU) 2015-2022. For other models, please choose your vehicle here.

The Honda HR-V (Mk2/RU, 2015–2022) hides a self-test inside its climate-control unit that most owners never discover. The right button sequence makes the panel run a full HVAC diagnostic, light all its segments, then blink any stored heating/air-conditioning fault codes — without a scan tool. Honda left it out of the handbook, but it is genuinely useful. Here is how to use it on the Mk2 HR-V.

What the Self-Diagnostic Mode Does

The HR-V’s climate module watches its own air-mix (temperature blend) motor, mode motor, blower, recirculation flap and temperature sensors. When you enter the self-test, it cycles those actuators, checks each sensor responds and reports any Diagnostic Trouble Codes (DTCs) by blinking an indicator. It is purely diagnostic — it reads faults out, it does not change settings or risk damage. The full routine is available on the touch-panel automatic climate control fitted to EX and higher trims; base trims use a dial A/C with its own entry.

How to Enter Self-Diagnostic Mode (Automatic Climate Control)

  1. Park, doors closed. Turn the ignition to LOCK (0), then back to ON (II) — engine off (push-button cars: press START once without the brake).
  2. Press and hold the climate ON/OFF control.
  3. Keeping it held, press the rear-window defogger button five times within 10 seconds.
  4. Release the ON/OFF control. The unit lights all segments, runs its actuators, then begins blinking.

On manual dial-A/C HR-Vs the test is reached by holding the recirculation button and turning the ignition to ON, or by the recirculation-plus-defogger combination — the recirculation indicator lights for about 2 seconds before the test starts.

How to Read the Codes

  • No fault stored: the indicator does not blink.
  • A fault present: it blinks a numbered DTC (or alternates “88” all-segments with a lettered segment); multiple faults cycle from the lowest first.
  • Typical meanings: 1–3 = air-mix motor circuit/linkage, 4–5 = mode motor circuit/linkage, 6 = blower motor, 7 = control-unit internal fault, 8–9 = evaporator temperature sensor.
  • Note the number — that is the code to look up.

How to Exit and Clear the Codes

To exit, turn the ignition to LOCK (0). To clear stored codes, fix the fault and re-run the sequence, or disconnect the 12 V battery for a few minutes. Clearing only erases the memory — a live fault re-logs on the next test, so diagnose the cause before clearing.

Safety Note

This is Honda’s factory diagnostic, run parked with the engine off. The blower and flaps move during the test — that is expected. It is isolated from the engine, airbag and brake systems, so running it cannot cause harm. Keep the HR-V stationary throughout.

Frequently Asked Questions

My HR-V has the flat touch climate panel — does the test still work?

Yes. The capacitive panel still registers the ON/OFF hold and the five rear-defogger taps, so the hidden self-test runs exactly as on button-type panels.

What does “88” on the display mean?

An “88” with every segment lit is the lamp-test stage. The unit alternates it with the real fault segment so you can identify the genuine code.

No code appeared — is my air conditioning healthy?

No blink means no electrical HVAC fault is stored, which is good. But a low refrigerant charge or a tired compressor often logs nothing, so a clean test does not guarantee cold air.

Does the hybrid HR-V use a different sequence?

No — the climate-control electronics are shared, so the hold-ON/OFF-then-defogger-five-times entry is the same on petrol and hybrid Mk2 HR-Vs.

Will it wipe my saved climate settings?

The panel may revert to default on exit, but nothing permanent is lost. Simply set your temperature and fan speed again.

Because these blinking numbers are diagnostic trouble codes, you can look up what a specific HVAC or related fault means on autodtcs.com.
