Your Volkswagen Golf (Mk7, 2012–2020) can drop every window — and tilt or open the sunroof — straight from the remote, without even sitting in the car. Walk up on a baking summer day, hold one button, and the cabin starts venting before you open the door. Realise from across the car park that you left a window cracked in the rain? Hold the other button and they all wind up. Volkswagen calls this convenience opening and closing, and most Mk7 owners never discover it because it is often switched off from the factory.
What convenience opening and closing does
The Mk7’s central electronics module can run all four electric windows (plus a panoramic sunroof, where fitted) from the radio remote. A long press of the unlock button rolls everything down; a long press of lock winds it all back up. The glass only moves while you keep the button held, so you stay in full control and can stop at any point by releasing. It works while you are stood next to the car — keep within a couple of metres so the remote stays in range and you can watch the windows.
How to open all the windows from the fob
- Stand close to the Golf with the doors locked or unlocked.
- Press and hold the unlock (open padlock) button on the remote.
- Keep holding — all four windows wind down together.
- If your Golf has the panoramic roof, it tilts first and then slides open as you keep the button pressed.
- Release the button the moment the windows reach the level you want.
How to close all the windows from the fob
- Stand next to the car within range of the remote.
- Press and hold the lock (closed padlock) button.
- All the windows wind up and the sunroof closes while you hold.
- Release once everything is shut. The Golf will normally flash the indicators to confirm it has locked.
If holding the button does nothing — enabling the feature
On a great many Mk7 Golfs — nearly all US-market cars and plenty of base European trims — convenience operation is coded inactive at the factory, so holding the remote does nothing at all. There is no on-screen menu toggle that switches it on by itself on the Mk7; the function has to be turned on in the central electronics (module 09) with a VAG diagnostic tool such as VCDS or OBDeleven. A coder activates “comfort opening” and “comfort closing via remote”, after which the buttons behave as above. It is a five-minute job for anyone with the right tool, and many independent VAG specialists will do it cheaply.
Before assuming it needs coding, check that the windows themselves are healthy: the remote function only works if all four windows operate correctly with one-touch auto up/down. If a window has lost its one-touch memory after a battery disconnect, re-initialise it by holding the switch fully up until it stops, then hold up again for a second, and repeat down.
The door-lock fallback
The Mk7’s driver door has a key barrel hidden behind a small cap on the handle (pull the plastic cover off, or remove the handle end cap). If the remote battery is flat, insert the emergency blade and turn and hold it toward unlock to lower the windows, or toward lock to raise them — the same comfort logic runs through the lock cylinder. The car must still have convenience operation enabled in its coding for this to work.
Frequently Asked Questions
Why doesn’t holding unlock do anything on my Golf Mk7?
Almost certainly because the feature is coded off. Volkswagen ships many Mk7s — especially US cars and lower European trims — with convenience opening disabled. A VCDS or OBDeleven coder enables it in module 09 in a few minutes.
Does the sunroof open too?
Yes, if your Mk7 has the panoramic sunroof. Holding unlock tilts it and then slides it open; holding lock closes it along with the windows.
My windows used to do this but stopped — what happened?
The most common cause is a window that has lost its one-touch calibration, often after a flat 12V battery. Re-initialise each window by holding the switch fully up, releasing, then holding up again briefly, and the remote function returns.
Can I open just the front windows instead of all four?
The Mk7 opens all of them together; there is no factory split between front and rear like on some later VAG cars. It is all windows or none.
Is it safe to close the windows remotely?
Use it only when you can see the car and no one’s hands are near the glass. Releasing the button stops movement instantly, so keep within a couple of metres and watch as the windows close.
If a window refuses to respond even after re-initialising, or you see a window or convenience-system warning, the fault may be logged as a diagnostic trouble code in the body control module. You can look up what that code means at autodtcs.com.
