If the remote on your Vauxhall Astra (Mk6/J, 2010–2018) has stopped unlocking the doors, the coin cell inside the fob has almost certainly gone flat. The good news with the Astra J is that the vast majority of these cars use a flip key you physically slot into the ignition and twist — so a dead fob battery does not stop the engine starting at all. It only kills the remote that locks the doors from a distance.
A small number of high-spec Astra J cars (top Elite trims with the keyless option) have a START/STOP button instead. If yours has that button, there is a short-range backup reader for a flat fob too. Check which one you have before you start, then follow the matching section below.
Start a Flip-Key Astra J With a Dead Fob
This is the method for almost every Astra J on the road, because most are twist-ignition cars.
- Press the button on the side of the fob to flip the metal blade out, or use the blade if it is already exposed.
- Get into the car (see the next section if the doors will not unlock remotely).
- Slide the blade into the ignition barrel on the steering column.
- Turn the key to start the engine exactly as you normally would. The transponder chip in the key head is read by the coil around the barrel, and it needs no battery to work.
The flat coin cell plays no part in starting a twist-ignition Astra J — once you are in the car, it starts as normal.
Start a Keyless (START/STOP) Astra J With a Dead Fob
If your Elite-spec Astra J has the push-button setup, the immobiliser can still read the fob at very close range:
- Get into the car first with the emergency blade (see below).
- Sit in, press the brake pedal and hold it down.
- Hold the fob against the backup-start spot the handbook shows for your car, so the chip sits on the reader.
- Press the START/STOP button. The car powers the passive chip, recognises your key and releases the engine.
Unlock the Astra J With the Emergency Key Blade
The same flip blade that you turn in the ignition also unlocks the door.
- Press the button on the corner of the fob to release the metal blade.
- Go to the driver’s door. The lock barrel is on the door handle, sometimes behind a small plastic cap — prise the cap off with the blade tip if fitted.
- Insert the blade and turn it to unlock the driver’s door. The interior central-locking button frees the rest once you are inside.
Why a Flat Battery Does Not Strand You
The Astra J’s immobiliser never relied on the coin cell. The transponder in the key head draws its power from the car’s reader coil by induction, like a contactless card, so it still talks to the car with a dead battery. The flat cell only stops the long-range radio that pops the locks from across the car park.
Replace the Key Fob Battery
- Flip the metal blade out — on the Astra J fob the battery cover is a small panel that simply pulls off the body.
- Remove the cover and lift out the old cell. The Astra J fob uses a single CR2032 3V coin cell.
- Fit the new battery the same way up as the old one, with the writing facing you and handling it by the edges.
- Clip the cover back on, fold the blade away and test the buttons. A fresh cell lasts roughly 2–3 years.
- If the buttons still do nothing with a new battery, the fob may need re-syncing — turn the ignition from OFF to RUN four times within a few seconds, then press a fob button when the car chimes.
Frequently Asked Questions
My Astra J fob is dead — will the car still start? Yes, on the flip-key cars (almost all of them). Slot the blade in the ignition and turn it; the coin cell has nothing to do with starting.
How do I know if my Astra J is keyless? Look for a START/STOP button on the dash and no ignition barrel. If you have a barrel you turn the key in, you have the flip-key system.
Where is the door lock on the Astra J? On the driver’s door handle. On some cars it is hidden behind a small clip-off cap you prise away with the blade.
Which battery does the Astra J fob take? A CR2032, sold in any supermarket or hardware shop.
The buttons still do nothing after a new battery — what now? Try re-syncing the fob with the OFF-to-RUN sequence above. If that fails, the fob’s circuit board or contacts may be faulty.
