Put the Electronic Parking Brake into Service Mode

The Mazda 6 (Mk3/GJ–GL, 2012–Present) gained an electric parking brake (EPB) with the 2016 facelift. Important to check before you start: the early GJ cars (roughly 2013–2015) still used a conventional cable handbrake lever — on those there is no EPB to retract and you change the rear pads the old-fashioned way. This procedure is for the 2016-on facelift Mazda 6 with the EPB switch on the centre console. On those cars the rear calipers are motor-clamped, and the motors must be parked fully open — maintenance mode — before you press the rear pistons back. Mazda publishes the in-car sequence, so no Mazda IDS or generic OBD EPB tool is needed for a routine rear pad change.

Putting the EPB-equipped Mazda 6 into maintenance mode

First confirm your car has the EPB switch (a P-button on the console), not a handbrake lever. Then, with the car cold, level and chocked, set the mode before removing the caliper.

  1. Switch the ignition to ON without starting: press the start button twice with your foot off the brake pedal.
  2. Push the EPB switch down to release the parking brake.
  3. Press the accelerator pedal fully to the floor and hold it, and at the same time press and hold the EPB switch down.
  4. Holding both, press the start button to cycle the ignition off and back on (the two presses within about 4 seconds of each other).
  5. You will hear a longer-than-usual winding sound from the rear brakes and an amber caution light appears — maintenance mode is active.

With the mode active the rear brakes behave like the fronts: the pistons press straight in with pliers or a spreader, no rotation needed. Do not turn or force the pistons.

Critical warning: never force the pistons by hand

Behind each rear piston is a motor and gear unit. If the EPB is still clamped and you lever, clamp or hammer the piston back, you strip those gears or shear the spindle — that is a new caliper. Always retract the EPB electronically through maintenance mode. Keep a battery maintainer on the 12V battery for a stable supply, and never substitute disconnecting the battery for the proper sequence — it does not retract the brake.

Exiting maintenance mode and bedding in

After fitting the new pads, reverse the sequence: ignition ON, hold the accelerator down, but this time pull the EPB switch up (engage) instead of down, and cycle the ignition the same way. The amber light clears and the EPB runs its automatic adjustment with a longer-than-normal whirr — let it finish. Cycle the EPB on/off a couple of times stationary, then bed the pads in with 10–15 gentle stops and light braking for the first 150–200 miles.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does my Mazda 6 have an EPB or a handbrake? The 2016-on facelift cars have the EPB switch (P-button) on the console. The early 2013–2015 GJ cars use a cable handbrake lever — those don’t need maintenance mode at all.

Do I need a scan tool for the facelift Mazda 6 rear pads? No. The EPB cars support the in-car key-sequence maintenance mode, so an IDS or OBD EPB tool is optional, not required, for a routine rear pad change.

How is the Mazda 6 sequence different from the Mazda 3 and CX-30? The 6 holds the EPB switch down together with the accelerator while cycling the ignition, rather than relying on three timed start-button presses. The principle — accelerator held, EPB commanded, ignition cycled — is the same.

The pistons won’t compress — what’s wrong? Either the mode didn’t take (no amber light, no winding sound) or you’re trying to rotate a piston that only presses straight in. Re-enter the mode and push squarely.

Why does the EPB whirr longer when I exit? That is the automatic adjustment re-clamping against the new, thicker pads. It is normal — allow it to complete before driving.
