The Audi A3 (8V, 2012–2020) — Sportback, saloon, Cabriolet and S3/RS3 — uses an electronic parking brake with motor-driven rear calipers. To change the rear pads you must put the EPB into service mode with a scan tool so the rear actuators wind back electronically. There is no owner-only button sequence on the 8V that releases the calipers for a pad change.
What Service Mode Is and Why You Need It
Each rear caliper carries an electric motor that drives a spindle onto the piston to clamp the pads for parking. Fresh pads are thicker, so the spindle must first be wound fully back. Service mode commands both rear motors to retract, leaving the piston free to push home by hand once the caliper is off the disc.
Use Ross-Tech VCDS, OBDeleven, or a generic £20–40 OBD EPB/SAS tool that lists a VAG “lining change / brake pad change” routine. The diagnostic socket is in the driver’s footwell area. You’ll see the parking-brake light flash while the calipers are in service mode — that’s normal and just means the brake is disabled.
Retracting the Caliper
- Park level, ignition on, engine off, battery charger connected — the EPB module aborts on low voltage.
- Turn Auto Hold off and release the parking brake (cycle the EPB on then off once if the tool prompts it).
- Select [53 — Parking Brake] → Basic Settings → Start lining change mode. The rear motors run and back the spindles off.
- Wait about 30 seconds after they stop, remove the caliper, and push the piston straight in by hand — no rotation.
Never Force the Pistons
Never clamp, wind or hand-force the rear pistons back on the A3 8V. The piston sits on the EPB motor’s spindle; forcing it strips the actuator gearbox or spindle thread and writes off the caliper. Service mode is there so the motor retracts the spindle electronically — only then does the piston push in, and only with light, straight hand pressure.
Exit and Bed-In
With the new pads in and the caliper torqued, select End lining change mode. The motors re-clamp and take up clearance. Cycle the ignition, apply and release the EPB twice, and confirm the brake-warning light has gone out (it should stop flashing). Then bed in with several moderate stops from about 30–40 mph, cooling between them, before any hard braking.
Frequently Asked Questions
Does the A3 8V have an electronic handbrake?
Yes — the 8V uses the EPB across the range, with motor-operated rear calipers and no cable lever, so a scan-tool service mode is needed for a rear pad change.
Why is the parking-brake light flashing during the job?
That’s normal in service mode — it indicates the brake is disabled while the calipers are open. It clears once you end the routine.
Can I do it without VCDS?
Yes — OBDeleven or a generic OBD EPB tool with a VAG lining-change routine works just as well as VCDS. A plain code reader does not.
Is the S3 / RS3 the same?
Yes — despite larger brakes they use the same rear EPB motors and identical service-mode routine.
EPB fault after the change?
Re-run End lining change mode to fully close the calipers, then clear the code. Look up any stored fault on autodtcs.com.
If a parking-brake warning persists after the job and logs a code, decode it on autodtcs.com.
