Turn Off the Start-Stop System

These instructions apply to the Audi A3 Mk3 (8V) 2012-2020. For other models, please choose your vehicle here.

The automatic start/stop system on the Audi A3 (8V, 2012–2020) switches the engine off when you stop and restarts it as you pull away. It trims fuel use in town, but plenty of owners find it intrusive in traffic. This guide shows how to turn start/stop off on an A3 8V, the second way to suppress it, and why the car re-enables it every time you start up.

How Start/Stop Works on the A3

The system only stops the engine when a set of conditions is met: the car is stationary, the engine is warm, the battery is well charged, the climate demand is satisfied, and you have the clutch up (manual) or your foot on the brake (S tronic). On a cold morning or with the climate working hard it may do nothing — that is the system behaving as designed. When it cuts the engine, a green “A” with a circular arrow appears in the driver information display.

Method 1 — The Start/Stop Button

  1. With the engine running, find the start/stop button marked with an “A” inside a circular arrow, on the centre console — usually near the engine start/stop button or the gear lever.
  2. Press the button once.
  3. The warning light in the button illuminates and the display confirms the system is off.
  4. The engine will now idle normally at a standstill.

Press the button again to switch start/stop back on.

Method 2 — Seat Belt and Door Interlock

The A3 will not auto-stop the engine unless the driver’s seat belt is fastened and the driver’s door is closed. As a quick workaround:

  1. With the driver’s seat belt unbuckled, the engine will not enter auto-stop.
  2. Opening the driver’s door also inhibits the system.

Stay belted while driving — this just explains why the system sometimes seems to do nothing.

Why It Comes Back On Every Drive

The button only disables start/stop for the current drive cycle. Switch the ignition off and on and the A3 re-enables it by default, because the system counts toward the car’s official emissions figures. There is no MMI setting to make “off” permanent — the only way to change the default is to recode the relevant module with a VAG-compatible tool such as OBDeleven or VCDS. Coding is at your own risk and may not suit cars that must meet specific emissions rules.

Start/Stop Stopped Working? Check These First

  • Battery state of charge low — the most common reason.
  • Battery replaced but not registered to the car — the A3 keeps a new, unregistered battery in a protective mode.
  • Engine or cabin not yet at temperature — climate demand keeps the engine running.
  • A stored fault — a battery-management or engine code can disable start/stop silently. Check what a code means on autodtcs.com.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I permanently disable start/stop on an A3 8V without coding?

No — the button only lasts for the current drive. A permanent default change needs recoding with a VAG diagnostic tool.

Is it bad for the engine to keep restarting?

No. The A3’s starter and AGM battery are designed for it, and oil pressure builds instantly on restart. The system also blocks auto-stop until the engine is warm.

I fitted a new battery and now start/stop won’t work — why?

Because the battery was not registered. The energy-management system holds an unregistered battery in a protective state that prevents auto-stop. Register it with a VAG tool.

Why does the “A” symbol have a line through it?

That means auto-stop is temporarily unavailable because a condition is not met (cold engine, low battery, climate demand). It resumes once conditions allow.

If a low or unregistered battery is the cause, our A3 8V battery disconnect/reconnect guide covers replacing and registering it.
