Put the Electronic Parking Brake into Service Mode

These instructions apply to the BMW X3 Mk3 (G01) 2017-Present. For other models, please choose your vehicle here.

Last updated: June 11, 2026

The BMW X3 (G01, 2017–Present) uses an electromechanical parking brake with electric motors bolted to the two rear calipers, so a rear pad change starts not with a wind-back tool but by retracting those pistons electronically — or by removing the actuators and winding them in by hand. There is no accelerator-and-switch owner sequence on the X3, and on this generation the consumer route is more limited than on older BMWs, so it pays to know your options before you start.

What service mode is and why the G01 needs it

Each rear caliper carries a geared motor that drives the parking-brake piston. With the system live, that motor clamps the piston and resists being pushed back. Retracting it cleanly means commanding both rear motors to wind fully open and locking the EPB out so it cannot re-apply while you work. Only then can the pistons be compressed and the new pads fitted.

Retracting the rear calipers on the G01

Park on level ground, chock a front wheel, and connect a battery charger so voltage stays up. Then choose a route:

  1. ISTA route (the reliable tool route). BMW ISTA / Rheingold carries the rear-brake service function (install position) for the G01 and will whir the motors open electronically. This is the cleanest method and also resets the brake CBS counter.
  2. Manual route (no tool). Confirm the EPB is released, unbolt the actuator motor (two bolts) from the back of each rear caliper, insert an Allen/Torx bit into the exposed spindle and turn it clockwise until it stops to wind the piston in, then press it fully home with a standard tool. Refit the motors before driving.

With the pistons home, fit the new pads and refit the caliper.

Never force the pistons back by hand

Never push or lever the G01’s rear EPB pistons back with a clamp or wind-back tool while the actuator is attached. They are electromechanical — driving one back through its motor shears the gearset and destroys the caliper. Retract the piston electronically with ISTA, or only ever by turning the spindle clockwise with the actuator removed. If a piston feels solid, it has not been retracted — stop and use the correct method rather than forcing it.

Exit, CBS reset and bed-in

With the pads in and the wheels back on, end the ISTA service function, or if you went manual, pump the brake pedal firmly several times then apply the EPB switch once so the motors re-clamp to the correct air gap. Pump the pedal until firm before moving the car. Reset the rear-brake CBS (Condition Based Service) counter in ISTA so the dash stops counting the old pads. Then bed the pads in: several firm slow-downs from about 30 mph with cooling between them, and check the parking brake holds on a slope.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does BimmerLink work for the G01 rear brakes? No — on the G01 there is no BimmerLink service function (ABL) to retract the rear parking brake; the option simply doesn’t appear. Use BMW ISTA for the electronic route, or do it manually by the actuator-off method.

Can I do the X3 with no tool at all? Yes, by the manual route — release the EPB, unbolt each rear actuator and wind the spindle in clockwise. You’ll just want a tool (ISTA) afterwards to reset the brake CBS reminder.

Do the pistons screw in or push straight? Both rear pistons wind in clockwise; they don’t push straight like the fronts. With the actuator off, turn the spindle clockwise on each side.

The routine aborted — why? Usually low battery voltage. Put the X3 on a charger; the EPB motors need a strong 12 V supply to complete a retract.
