Open the Hidden Diagnostic Menu

These instructions apply to the Vauxhall Astra Mk6 (J/P10) 2010-2018. For other models, please choose your vehicle here.

Last updated: June 12, 2026

The Vauxhall Astra (Mk6/J, 2010–2018) carries a genuine factory hidden test menu that any owner can open without a scan tool. Depending on your trim it lives either in the instrument cluster (the Board Information Display, or BID) or in the colour radio/IntelliLink screen. Either way it gives you read-only diagnostic pages — battery voltage, coolant temperature, hardware and software versions, and a bus page that lists faults reported by other modules.

What the Hidden Menu Is and What It Shows

This is the same diagnostic readout Vauxhall technicians use for a quick health check. On the Astra J the pages typically include:

  • Battery voltage at the cluster/display.
  • Engine coolant temperature as a live number.
  • Display temperature (LCD), dimmer and lighting levels.
  • Hardware version, software version and build date of the unit.
  • A “Bus” page that lists incoming faults reported by other control units on the CAN network.

Every page is read-only, so you cannot change a setting or upset the car by scrolling through them.

How to Open It

Use whichever method matches your car:

  1. Cluster (BID) method: turn the ignition on, then press the trip-reset stalk button four times and hold it in on the fourth press until the cluster switches to the numbered test screen.
  2. Radio / IntelliLink method: with the ignition on and the display awake, press and hold the SETTINGS button on the radio until it beeps. Release, then press the BC (Board Computer) button to enter and scroll the hidden screens.

Reading Voltage, Temperatures and Codes

Step through the pages with the BC button (radio method) or the trip-reset button (cluster method). With the engine running, the battery-voltage page should read about 13.8–14.6 V if the alternator is healthy. The Bus page is the interesting one: it lists fault references coming in from other modules, so a code here points you at exactly which system is complaining. Note any number you see for later decoding.

How to Exit

To leave the radio menu, press the SETTINGS or back/menu button to return to the normal display, or simply switch the ignition off. The cluster BID menu closes the instant you turn the ignition off — nothing is saved and nothing is changed.

Frequently Asked Questions

Which method should I use on my Astra J?

If you have a simple three-line cluster display, use the trip-reset stalk method. If you have the colour radio or IntelliLink screen, use the hold-SETTINGS-then-BC method.

Does the hidden menu change any settings?

No. The pages are diagnostic read-outs only. Scrolling through them will not reset your service light, trip data or personalisation.

What does the Bus page show?

It lists faults reported across the CAN network by other control units — a quick way to see which module has flagged a problem.

The SETTINGS button won’t beep — why?

The menu only works with the factory head unit. Aftermarket radios remove the link to the BC system, so the combination does nothing.

Can I clear faults from this menu?

No — it only displays them. To understand a code shown on the Bus page, look it up on autodtcs.com.

If the Bus page or a value screen throws up a fault reference, decode what it means on autodtcs.com.
