If the key fob on your Abarth 124 Spider (2016–2020) has gone weak or the locking has become intermittent, the coin cell inside is almost certainly flat. Because the 124 shares its smart key with the Mazda MX-5, it’s a quick swap with a common coin cell.
Battery First — What You Need
- A CR2025 coin cell (check the marking on the old one when you open the fob).
- A small flat screwdriver.
Replacing the Cell
- Slide out the emergency key blade from the fob.
- Open the case with a small screwdriver in the slot.
- Lift the transmitter out of its holder to reach the cell.
- Renew the coin cell, observing the correct polarity.
- Reassemble in reverse order and check the remote locks and unlocks the car.
Lost Key or Adding a Spare
A cell swap keeps the existing coding. A lost or broken key can only be ordered and programmed by a dealer with a diagnostic tool — there’s no owner programming sequence.
If a Fresh Cell Doesn’t Help
- Check the polarity — an upside-down cell won’t work.
- Use the emergency blade to unlock the door in the meantime.
- Still intermittent? A receiver fault can store a code — look it up on autodtcs.com.
Frequently Asked Questions
What battery does the Abarth 124 Spider key use?
A single coin cell, typically a CR2025 — confirm against the old one.
Do I need to reprogram the key after the swap?
No — the coding is retained for a battery change.
Can I program a new key myself?
No — a replacement must be ordered and coded by a dealer with a diagnostic tool.
Where is the emergency key blade?
It slides out of the fob and unlocks the driver’s door if the remote is dead.
If the fob stopped working after a battery disconnection, see our Abarth 124 Spider battery disconnect/reconnect guide.
