Set the Wiper Service Position

Changing the blades or freeing them from ice on an Audi A4 (B9/8W, 2015–present) means first lifting the wiper arms into their service position. Park them normally and they sit under the bonnet lip out of reach — here’s the proper way up.

The service position on the A4 — also called the maintenance or winter position — is a mode that sweeps the wiper arms up to vertical and holds them there, high and clear of the bonnet. You’ll want it in a few everyday situations: fitting new blades when the old ones start to smear or judder, standing the arms up before a hard frost so the rubber doesn’t freeze flat to the glass overnight, and clearing wet leaves or grit out of the scuttle channel at the base of the screen. It’s normal behaviour rather than a fault — the A4 deliberately parks its arms low. On this car the mode is armed by cycling the ignition and then flicking the stalk, exactly as set out below.

Why the Service Position Exists

The A4 tucks its wiper arms right down at the foot of the windscreen, below the trailing edge of the bonnet and the plastic scuttle trim. That hides them and keeps them out of the airflow, but it also means there’s no room to lift an arm from where it parks. Drag one up cold and you’re straining it against the bonnet edge and loading the linkage — enough to bend an arm, disturb the splined shaft, or chip the trim. Raising the arms into the service position first gives them their full sweep and a safe gap, so nothing is levered against the bodywork.

Before You Start

• Make sure the bonnet is fully shut and latched — the mode won’t arm with it open, and the arms rise into the space it occupies.
• Be ready to work the ignition as the method below needs — the A4 arms the mode as the ignition goes off.
• If the blades are frozen to the glass, free them gently first so the motor isn’t hauling iced-on rubber up the screen.
• Have the new blades unpacked and ready before an arm is left standing.
• Work one arm at a time, keeping a hand on whichever arm you’ve raised.

Raising the Wipers

1. Check the bonnet is shut — the mode won’t arm otherwise.
2. Switch the ignition on, then off.
3. Within a few seconds, flick the wiper stalk down (single-wipe) briefly.
4. The arms sweep up and hold vertical.
5. Pull them off the glass to change blades or clear snow.

Some A4s also list a wiper service position in the MMI car/service menu.

Putting Them Back

Lay the arms back down, then switch the ignition on and run the wipers once to return them to park. Do this before you drive off, so the arms aren’t left standing and can’t slap down hard against the glass once the wipers run at speed.

Won’t Lift?

• Too slow — the stalk only works for a few seconds after ignition-off; retry from the top.
• Bonnet ajar — latch it fully, or the mode won’t arm.
• Quick flick missed — a proper flick of the stalk to single-wipe is what triggers it; repeat the action.
• Blades iced on — free them from the glass first, then try again.
• Stalk method not responding — look for the service-position option in the MMI menu instead.

Changing the Blades and What to Expect

With an arm standing vertical, keep a hand on it — the arms are spring-loaded and will snap back onto the glass if they slip, which can crack the screen. The A4 uses a common clip-style fitting, where the blade locks onto a hook or bayonet on the arm; press the release catch, slide the old blade off, and click the new one into place. Check it’s properly seated, then lower the arm gently rather than letting it drop. Repeat on the other side and return the wipers to park.
