Reset the Service Indicator (CBS)

These instructions apply to the BMW 1 Series Mk3 (F40) 2019-Present. For other models, please choose your vehicle here.

Last updated: June 6, 2026

When a service item — engine oil, brake fluid, vehicle check — comes due on your BMW 1 Series Mk3 (F40, 2019–present), the dash shows it under Condition Based Servicing (CBS). You reset each item yourself from the iDrive/cluster service menu once the work is done. Here’s how.

How CBS Works

The F40 monitors each service item by condition rather than just mileage. Two rules: only reset an item once the work is genuinely done, and an item only resets if it’s at 90% or less of its life. If both engine oil and vehicle-check are due, reset engine oil first.

How to Reset a Service Item on the F40

  1. Close the doors. Turn the ignition on without starting — press the start/stop button twice without touching the pedals (or insert the key into the slot if fitted).
  2. Open the service requirements / CBS list — via iDrive CAR/Vehicle → Vehicle status → Service required, or by holding the trip/BC button on the wiper stalk until the service menu appears on the cluster.
  3. Select the item that’s due (e.g. Engine oil), choose ‘Reset’ and confirm.
  4. Repeat for any other completed item.

If It Won’t Reset

  • The item is above 90% life — CBS won’t reset an item that isn’t due yet.
  • Brakes won’t reset — the brake-wear sensor must be working.
  • Make sure the on-board clock is set — CBS uses it.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is Condition Based Servicing?

BMW’s system that tracks each service item by condition and shows what’s due, so you reset items individually.

Do I need a diagnostic tool?

No — the resets are done from the iDrive/cluster menu with the ignition on.

Why won’t it let me reset?

An item only resets when it’s at 90% or less of its life.

Oil or vehicle check first?

Reset engine oil first if both are due.

If a warning light appeared with the service message, look it up on autodtcs.com. After battery work, see our 1 Series F40 battery guide.
