The BMW 5 Series (E39, 1996–2004) uses BMW’s Service Interval Indicator (SIA) — the green/yellow/red dots and “Oil Service” or “Inspection” message in the cluster. After a service you reset it yourself from the trip-recorder button, no tools needed. This guide shows the exact sequence for the later (09/2000-on) cars; earlier cars are similar.
Before You Start
The SIA can only be reset when enough of the interval has been used — BMW require at least 20% of the distance/fuel toward the next service to have passed for an Oil/Inspection reset, and the Brake service reset is only available 20 days after the last one. If you try to reset too early, the display simply won’t offer “Reset”.
How to Reset the E39 Service Indicator
- Put the ignition key in position “0” (off).
- Press and hold the trip-recorder (odometer reset) button in the cluster.
- Keeping it held, turn the ignition key to position “1”.
- Hold the button for about 5 seconds until the display shows “Oil Service” or “Inspection” with “Reset” (or “Re”).
- Press and hold the button again for ~5 seconds until “Reset” flashes.
- Press the button briefly to confirm — the new interval is shown.
- The clock symbol with “Reset” then appears for the Brake service; confirm it the same way. The display shows “END SIA” when done.
To reset only the Oil/Inspection (or only the Brake) service, confirm just that one and let the procedure time out.
If It Won’t Reset
- “Reset” not offered: not enough of the interval has elapsed — you can’t reset a fresh service early.
- Display times out: you didn’t confirm within the window — start again from key position 0.
- Brake reset unavailable: it’s locked out for 20 days after the last brake reset.
Frequently Asked Questions
Does resetting the SIA change anything mechanical?
No — it only restarts the service-interval counter. Always do the actual oil/inspection work before resetting.
Why won’t my E39 let me reset?
The SIA blocks an early reset — at least 20% of the interval must be used. If you’ve genuinely just serviced it at the due point, the reset will be available.
My car is a pre-2000 E39 — is it the same?
Very similar — hold the trip button, switch the ignition to position 1, and follow the on-screen Reset prompts. The display wording differs slightly.
The red/yellow dots are still showing — why?
The dots count down with distance; after a correct reset they return to green. If they don’t, the reset didn’t confirm — repeat the sequence.
After a battery change you may also want to check the clock and settings — see our E39 battery disconnect/reconnect guide. For warning lights, look up the code on autodtcs.com.
