Replace the Key Fob Battery

Reviewed by the Service Reset editor · Updated September 27, 2026 · How we verify

These instructions apply to the Chevrolet Silverado 1500 Mk3 (K2XX) 2014-2018.

If the key fob on your 2014–2018 Chevrolet Silverado 1500 (K2XX) is getting weak — you have to press twice, or stand right next to the truck — the coin cell is due. It’s a five-minute swap with no special tools. This is the US-market procedure.

  1. Slide the release catch on the fob and pull out the emergency key blade.
  2. Use the blade (or a coin) in the seam to gently pry the two fob halves apart.
  3. Note which way up the old cell sits, lift out the old CR2450, and drop in a fresh CR2450 the same way up (+ side as before).
  4. Snap the halves back together until they click, and reinsert the emergency key blade.
  5. Test lock and unlock. If it doesn’t respond, cycle the ignition once or re-sync the fob per your owner’s manual.

FAQ

Which battery does the Silverado fob take?

The 2014–2018 Silverado smart fob uses a CR2450 coin cell. (Some flip-key remotes use a CR2032 — match what you take out.)

The fob still won’t work after the new battery.

Check the battery is the right way up and seated, and press the buttons firmly. Corrosion on the contacts or a fob that needs re-syncing are the next things to check.

Does remote start need anything different?

No — once the fresh cell is in and the fob is paired, remote start works as before; range simply improves.

Do I need to program the fob after a battery change?

No. A battery swap doesn’t erase the fob’s pairing — programming is only needed for a brand-new fob.

If a “key not detected” message keeps appearing after a good battery, look the code up on autodtcs.com.
