Reset the Oil Life

Reviewed by the Service Reset editor · Updated October 12, 2026 · How we verify

These instructions apply to the Chevrolet Suburban (K2XX) 2015-2020.
For other models, please choose your vehicle here.

The 2015–2020 Chevrolet Suburban (K2XX), GM’s longest full-size SUV, shows CHANGE ENGINE OIL SOON at service time via the GM Oil Life System. After an oil and filter change you clear it from the Driver Information Center — and this generation gives you two ways to do it. This is the US-market procedure.

  1. Ignition ON/RUN, engine off. Page the DIC to OIL LIFE REMAINING with the steering-wheel buttons (or the trip stem on trucks without DIC buttons).
  2. Hold the ✓ (checkmark) button — or the trip stem — for several seconds until it reads 100%.

Accelerator-pedal method

  1. Ignition ON/RUN, engine off.
  2. Press the accelerator to the floor slowly, three times within five seconds.
  3. 100% on OIL LIFE REMAINING confirms it.

FAQ

Button or pedal?

Both work on the K2XX Suburban. The earlier GMT900 Suburban had only the SET/RESET-button method.

What oil and how much?

The 5.3L V8 takes dexos1 0W-20 (2017 on; 2015–2016 called for 5W-30), about 8.0 qt with a filter.

Does it have Stop/Start and need an AGM battery?

No — these K2XX full-size SUVs have no Auto Stop/Start, so a standard maintenance-free battery is correct.

The Suburban is the extended-length version of the Chevrolet Tahoe and shares the Silverado’s GM running gear, so these steps are identical across all three — see our Chevrolet Tahoe guides and Silverado guides.

If your Suburban stores a fault code with the warning light, decode it on autodtcs.com.
