Enable or Disable the Stop & Start System

These instructions apply to the Dacia Duster Mk2 (HM) 2018-Present. For other models, please choose your vehicle here.

Last updated: June 5, 2026

The Dacia Duster Mk2 (HM, 2018–present) has a Stop & Start system that cuts the engine when you come to a halt to save fuel. It’s handy on the motorway but tiresome in stop-go traffic, so here’s how to switch it off, why it sometimes won’t cut the engine at all, and what to expect.

How It Works on the Duster

Come to a stop with the car in neutral and your foot off the clutch (manual) or on the brake (automatic/EDC) and the engine shuts down. Press the clutch or lift off the brake and it fires straight back up. It only operates once the engine is warm and the battery is in good shape.

Switching It Off

  1. With the engine running, find the Stop & Start button — usually marked “A” inside a circular arrow (sometimes labelled ECO/Stop&Start), on the dash or centre console.
  2. Press it once. The warning light comes on to confirm the system is disabled, and the engine then idles normally at a stop.

Switching It Back On

Press the button again, or simply restart the car — Stop & Start defaults back on every time you switch the ignition off and on. There’s no menu setting to make “off” permanent.

Why It Sometimes Won’t Cut the Engine

  • The engine isn’t warm yet, or the cabin is calling for strong heating/demisting.
  • The battery charge is low — common after short trips or a recent battery change; the system blocks auto-stop to protect the battery.
  • You’re on a slope, the steering is turned, or you haven’t fully stopped.

If it stopped working entirely after a battery change, let the battery charge fully — see our Duster battery guide.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does the Duster remember if I turn Stop & Start off?

No — it comes back on at every start. There’s no built-in way to keep it permanently off.

Is it bad for the engine?

No — the Duster’s starter and battery are built for it, and the system skips stops whenever conditions aren’t right.

Why won’t the engine auto-stop?

Usually a cold engine, a low battery, or the climate system needing the engine — all normal blocking conditions.

There’s a Stop & Start warning light on — is that a fault?

If you pressed the button, the light just shows it’s switched off. If you didn’t, it usually points to battery condition — have it checked if it persists.

If a warning light appeared alongside the fault, look up the code on autodtcs.com. To clear a service reminder, see our Duster service reset guide.
