To change the front wiper blades on your DS 3 (2015–2019), you first need to lift the wiper arms into their service position. If you just switch off and lift the arms, they foul the bonnet — the car has a simple owner sequence to park them clear of the glass. No tools. It’s a completely normal feature and not a fault: at rest the DS 3 tucks its arms low under the bonnet lip, and the service position simply asks the car to raise them into the open middle of the screen. You’ll use the same trick for a couple of jobs — fitting fresh blades, or standing the arms up before a hard frost so they don’t freeze flat to the glass or tear when you first switch on.

Why There’s a Service Position

When the wipers finish and switch off, the DS 3 parks the arms low against the base of the screen, tucked under the rear edge of the bonnet. That keeps them out of the way and out of sight, but it also means there’s no room to hinge an arm up or clip a new blade on. Try to lift an arm from park and it swings straight into the bonnet lip, where it’s easy to bend the arm or mark the paint. The service position solves that by driving the arms up to the middle of the glass and stopping them there, clear of the bonnet, with plenty of space to work.

Before You Start

  • Close the bonnet. Do this job with the bonnet shut — the arms need to swing up over it, not into it.
  • Mind the timing. The sequence relies on a short window right after you switch off, so be ready to flick the stalk straight away.
  • Free frozen blades first. If the rubber is iced to the glass, ease it loose by hand before you send the arms up, or the motor can stall against the stuck blade.
  • Have the new blades ready. Unwrap them and check the clip before you start, so the arms aren’t standing under spring tension any longer than needed.
  • Work one arm at a time. Lift, change and lower a single arm before moving to the other.

Moving the Wipers to the Service Position

  1. Make sure the bonnet is closed.
  2. Turn the ignition off.
  3. Within 1 minute of switching off, briefly operate the wiper stalk (flick the wipers on) — the arms move up to the service position and stop.
  4. You can now lift the arms off the glass and renew the blades.

Returning the Wipers to Normal

  1. Fold the arms back onto the screen.
  2. Turn the ignition on and operate the wiper stalk — the wipers return to their normal parked position.

Lower the arms flat before you switch on again so they don’t snap back onto bare glass, and let the motor do the parking rather than pushing the arms down by hand.

If It Doesn’t Work

  • You missed the 1-minute window. After that the wipers just run normally — switch off and try again straight away.
  • The ignition wasn’t off. The car only accepts the flick as a service-position request once the ignition is off, so switch off first.
  • The stalk flick was too long. A short, brief operation is what triggers it; a long hold just runs the wipers.
  • The wipers weren’t parked. Let them finish and settle at rest before you switch off and flick the stalk.
  • Blades frozen to the glass. Free the rubber by hand first so the motor isn’t fighting stuck blades.
  • Still nothing? Start over — ignition off, then flick the stalk within the window.

Changing the Blades

With the arms raised, keep a hand on each one — a wiper arm is spring-loaded and will snap back hard onto the glass if it slips, which can crack the screen. Most DS 3 blades unclip from the hook fitting at the end of the arm with a small tab; release it, slide the old blade off and clip the new one on until it clicks home. Check it’s locked with a gentle tug, then lower the arm slowly rather than letting it drop.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I lift the DS 3 wipers to change the blades?

With the bonnet closed, turn the ignition off, then within 1 minute briefly flick the wiper stalk. The arms rise up the screen to the service position and stop, so you can lift them off the glass.

Do I need any tools?

No. It’s done entirely with the ignition and the wiper stalk; you only need your hands to lift the arms and clip the new blades on. There’s no trim to remove.

How do I get the wipers back to normal?

Fold the arms flat onto the screen, turn the ignition on and operate the wiper stalk. The wipers return to their normal parked position on their own.

Can I just lift the arms while they’re parked?

No — at rest they sit under the bonnet lip with no clearance, so lifting them there fouls the bonnet and can bend an arm or mark the paint. Use the service position so they clear the bonnet first.

Why won’t the wipers lift?

You most likely missed the 1-minute window after switching off, or the ignition wasn’t off when you flicked the stalk. Switch off and flick the stalk again straight away.

Does this reset anything on the car?

No. The service position only moves the wiper arms; it doesn’t clear a service reminder, warning light or any stored setting. It’s purely there to help you reach the blades.
