An automatic Ford EcoSport (B515, 2014–2022) that won’t come out of P — usually a flat battery or a shift-interlock fault — has a mechanical emergency release under the centre-console trim. It’s all in the cabin, but it does mean removing a couple of panels, so allow some time.
Secure the Car First
Pull the handbrake or chock a wheel before you release it — once out of P the car can roll.
Reaching and Pressing the Release
- Turn the ignition key to ‘0’ (off) and set the handbrake.
- With a trim tool, remove the gear-lever surround.
- Remove the climate-control panel and the centre-console inner cover to expose the release.
- Press the release button and move the lever to ‘N’.
- Refit the panels in reverse order once the car is repositioned.
Because it involves pulling the climate panel, some owners prefer to leave this to a garage — but no special tool or lifting is required.
Afterwards
This only lets you move the car. If a flat battery caused it, deal with the 12 V battery; if it locks again with a healthy battery, have the interlock checked.
Frequently Asked Questions
My EcoSport auto won’t leave Park — how do I move it?
Ignition off, handbrake on, remove the gear-lever surround, climate panel and console inner cover, press the release button and move the lever to N.
Is it safe to do myself?
Yes — it’s a cabin override with no electrical risk, but it needs a few trim panels off, so work carefully.
Why did it lock in Park?
Most often a flat 12 V battery or a shift-interlock fault.
Do I need a special tool?
No special tool — just a plastic trim tool to release the panels without breaking the clips.
If a dead battery was behind it, see our EcoSport battery guide. For a stored transmission code, look it up on autodtcs.com.
