An automatic Ford Mondeo (Mk V, CD391, 2014–2022) that won’t come out of P — usually a flat battery or a shift-interlock fault — has a mechanical emergency release beside the centre console. It’s a cabin job needing only a screwdriver.
Secure the Car First
Apply the parking brake or chock a wheel before you release it — once out of P the car can roll.
Releasing from Park
- Set the parking brake and keep the brake pedal pressed.
- Remove the right-hand side panel of the centre console to expose the access hole.
- Insert a screwdriver into the access hole and push and hold the release knob.
- Move the gear lever to ‘N’, then withdraw the screwdriver.
- Refit the side panel.
Afterwards
This only lets you reposition the car. If a flat battery caused it, deal with the 12 V battery; if it locks again with a healthy battery, have the interlock and transmission checked.
Frequently Asked Questions
My Mondeo auto won’t leave Park — how do I move it?
Parking brake on, remove the console right side panel, insert a screwdriver into the access hole, push and hold the release knob and move the lever to N.
Is it safe to do myself?
Yes — it’s a cabin override with no electrical risk. Secure the car first so it can’t roll.
Why did it lock in Park?
Most often a flat 12 V battery or a shift-interlock fault.
Do I need a special tool?
No — a flat-bladed screwdriver presses the release knob through the access hole.
If a dead battery was behind it, see our Mondeo battery guide. For a stored transmission code, look it up on autodtcs.com.
