Reset the Oil Life

Reviewed by the Service Reset editor · Updated October 14, 2026 · How we verify

These instructions apply to the Ford Mustang Mk6 (S550) 2015-2023.
For other models, please choose your vehicle here.

The 2015–2023 Ford Mustang (S550) uses the Intelligent Oil-Life Monitor, reset from the message center with the steering-wheel buttons after each oil change. This is the US-market procedure.

  1. Ignition ON (engine off). In the information display, select Settings → Vehicle → Oil Life Reset.
  2. On the Oil Life screen, press and hold OK until the cluster shows Reset Successful and 100% remaining life.
  3. If it shows Not Reset or Reset Cancelled, repeat.

FAQ

What oil does it take?

5W-30 on the 2.3L EcoBoost (5.7 qt) and 5W-20 on the 5.0L V8 GT (10.0 qt); track use calls for a heavier grade.

When do I reset it?

After every oil and filter change; the warning shows “Change Engine Oil Soon” at 10% and “Oil Change Required” at 0%.

It won’t reset.

Hold OK until “Reset Successful” appears; if it says “Not Reset,” run through the menu again.

If your Mustang stores a fault code with the warning light, look it up on autodtcs.com.
