The Toyota Auris uses a steering angle sensor to support vehicle stability systems such as VSC (Vehicle Stability Control) and TRC (Traction Control).
After certain repairs or battery disconnection, the steering angle sensor must be re-initialized to restore correct system operation.
This procedure applies to Toyota Auris E15 models produced between 2006 and 2014, including petrol, diesel, and hybrid variants.
When Steering Angle Sensor Initialization Is Required
- After disconnecting or replacing the vehicle battery
- Following wheel alignment
- After suspension or steering repairs
- If VSC, TRC, or stability warning lights remain illuminated
Preparation
- Park the vehicle on a level surface.
- Ensure the front wheels are pointing straight ahead.
- Switch the ignition OFF.
Steering Angle Sensor Initialization Procedure
- Disconnect the negative (earth) battery terminal.
- Wait at least 2 seconds.
- Reconnect the negative battery terminal.
- Switch the ignition ON (engine not running).
- Slowly turn the steering wheel fully to the left stop.
- Slowly turn the steering wheel fully to the right stop.
- Return the steering wheel to the center (straight-ahead) position.
The steering angle sensor is now initialized.
Additional Information
- This procedure also recalibrates related stability control reference values.
- Do not move the vehicle during the initialization process.
- If warning lights remain on, repeat the procedure carefully.
- Persistent warnings may indicate an alignment issue or sensor fault.
