What the Service Indicator Means
The service indicator on the third-generation i20 is a maintenance reminder, not a fault light. The car counts down a Service Interval based on the distance you drive and the time that passes, and when that interval runs out it shows the spanner symbol or a “Service Required” message at start-up to prompt a routine service. It has no way of knowing whether the oil has been changed — it simply tracks the interval — so the reminder stays on the display until you reset it through the menu.
That means the light appearing is normal and expected; it does not indicate a problem with the engine. It is the same prompt whether the car is freshly serviced or overdue. A separate, clearly-lit warning symbol — the amber engine-management light, a red oil-pressure or temperature light, the battery/charging symbol — is a different matter: that is a genuine fault and will not clear with the service-interval reset.
First, a Few Checks
Only reset the indicator once the service has actually been done; clearing it early just hides the reminder while the oil and filters keep ageing.
Set the car up before you open the menu:
- Finish the service first — oil, filter and anything else due — so the new interval starts from fresh oil.
- Park safely with the handbrake on, on level ground.
- Ignition on, engine off. Press the Start button without your foot on the brake (or, with a key, turn to the ON position) so the cluster powers up without the engine running.
- No tools needed — everything is done from the instrument-cluster menu with the steering-wheel buttons.
How to Reset the i20 Mk3 Service Indicator
- Turn the ignition on (engine doesn’t need to be running).
- Press the ‘MENU’ button on the steering wheel repeatedly until ‘User Settings’ appears.

If the Reminder Comes Back
If the spanner is still there after you switch off and on again, work through these before assuming a fault:
- It reappears at start-up — the reset wasn’t confirmed; repeat and select Reset, then Yes.
- You’re in the wrong menu item — make sure you selected ‘Service Interval’ under User Settings, not a trip or display item.
- Wrong ignition state — if the engine started, switch back to ignition-on with the engine off and retry.
- Cycle and repeat — turn everything off, wait a few seconds, power the cluster back up and run through the menu once more.
- A separate warning light is on — that’s a fault, not the service timer, and won’t clear this way.
Once the Reset Is Done
Once you confirm ‘Yes’, the Service Interval jumps back to the full distance and the spanner symbol clears immediately. The setting is saved straight away, so the reminder should stay off through the next start-up and won’t return until the new interval has been used up. If the cluster is clean at the next start-up, the reset has worked and there is nothing else to do.
