Reinitialise the Electric Windows

If the one-touch (auto up/down) windows on your Hyundai i30 Mk3 (PD, 2017–present) have stopped working — or now only move while you hold the switch, usually after a battery disconnection or a flat battery — each window needs re-initialising so it relearns its closed position. It’s a quick no-tools job. This guide shows how.

Why One-Touch Stops Working

Each window motor stores its top (closed) position so the auto function and the anti-trap (pinch protection) know where the glass stops. Cutting power clears that memory, so the window only inches up while you hold the switch. Re-initialising restores normal operation.

How to Re-initialise the i30 Mk3 Windows

Driver door window and mirror switches on the Hyundai i30 Mk3
The driver’s-door window switches (LHD car shown); the driver’s window has the auto up/down function to re-initialise.
  1. Turn the ignition on.
  2. Work on one window at a time from its own switch.
  3. Pull the switch up and hold to fully close the window, and keep holding for about 1 second after it’s fully shut.
  4. Release the switch.
  5. Test the one-touch function — a single tap up or down should now run the window automatically. Repeat for each window that lost the feature.

If It Still Won’t Auto-Close

  • Repeat the procedure — the brief hold after the glass reaches the top is what registers the limit.
  • Make sure the glass reaches the very top — grit or ice in the runner can stop it short and prevent the relearn.
  • After a battery disconnection this is the step Hyundai lists to restore the windows, so run it alongside any battery work.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why did my i30 windows lose auto after the battery was off?

Disconnecting power wipes the stored closed position, so auto and anti-trap switch off until you re-teach each window.

The window only moves while I hold the switch — same fault?

Yes — that’s the “normalisation lost” state. The pull-and-hold routine re-teaches it and one-touch returns.

The window bounces back down when closing — why?

That’s the anti-trap protection reacting because the limit isn’t learned. Complete the routine and it clears.

Do I need any tools?

No — just the door switches with the ignition on.
