Home/Hyundai/Santa Fe/Mk4 (TM) 2018-2023/Reset a Frozen Infotainment Screen

Reset a Frozen Infotainment Screen

These instructions apply to the Hyundai Santa Fe Mk4 (TM) 2018-2023. For other models, please choose your vehicle here.

Last updated: June 10, 2026

The Hyundai Santa Fe Mk4 (TM, 2018–2023) carries one of Hyundai’s larger infotainment setups — up to a 10.25-inch widescreen AVN navigation unit with Bluelink connected services — and like any computer it can occasionally freeze. If the screen locks up, goes black, or ignores taps while the audio keeps playing, you can reboot it yourself in under a minute and keep all your data.

The Infotainment System in This Santa Fe

The TM Santa Fe shipped with an 8-inch Display Audio or the 10.25-inch AVN navigation head unit. The 2021 facelift widened the screen further and refreshed the software. Apple CarPlay and Android Auto are wired on most TM cars, and a USB handshake stall is the most common freeze trigger. The Power / Volume knob beside the screen is the reboot control, and the unit also has a small reset pinhole on the faceplate.

Soft Reset (No Data Loss)

  1. Keep the ignition on (engine running or ACC).
  2. Press and hold the Power / Volume knob for about 10–15 seconds until the screen goes dark and the Hyundai logo reappears.
  3. Or, with a straightened paperclip, briefly press the RESET pinhole near the knob for the same reboot.
  4. Release and wait for the home screen.

This Is Safe — Nothing Is Erased

A reboot only restarts the software. Your Bluelink login, saved navigation destinations, paired phones, presets and preferences all survive.

If It Stays Frozen

  • Unplug the USB cable feeding CarPlay/Android Auto — a worn or off-brand cable regularly locks the projection screen.
  • Switch the ignition off, lock the car, wait 2–3 minutes, then restart.
  • Install the latest software from update.hyundai.com via USB — Hyundai issued TM Santa Fe updates that cure recurring freezes and phone-projection dropouts.
  • Still stuck? Disconnect the 12 V battery for ~15 minutes — see our Santa Fe Mk4 battery guide. (On the hybrid/PHEV the 12 V is separate from the drive battery.)

Factory Reset (Erases Your Data)

Only for persistent faults: tap Setup / Settings → General → Reset (or “Factory data reset”) and confirm. This wipes Bluelink, paired devices, saved destinations and presets back to showroom state, so reserve it for when a reboot won’t hold.

Frequently Asked Questions

How long do I hold the knob on the Santa Fe?

On the larger TM unit, give it a full 10–15 seconds — it can take a moment longer than smaller Hyundai screens before the logo appears.

My Santa Fe’s CarPlay keeps dropping — reset or cable?

Try a genuine USB cable first, then install the current head-unit update from Hyundai; together they fix most TM dropouts.

Does the knob-hold delete my Bluelink account or favourites?

No. A soft reset keeps Bluelink and saved destinations; only a factory reset removes them.

Where is the reset pinhole on the Santa Fe?

It is a small unmarked hole on the faceplate near the volume knob. A brief press reboots without losing data.

Black screen but audio still plays — is the unit dead?

Almost never. That is the textbook soft-reset case — hold the Power knob for 10–15 seconds.

If a dashboard warning light appeared alongside the glitch, decode it on autodtcs.com.
