Disconnect and Reconnect the Battery

Disconnecting the 12 V battery on a Hyundai Santa Fe Mk4 (TM, 2018–2023) is a simple engine-bay job on the petrol and diesel versions. You might do it to fit a new battery, before electrical or bodywork repairs, to prevent a slow drain over weeks of storage, or to recover the car after a flat. Keep to the right order — negative off first, positive on first — and the Santa Fe powers back up cleanly and relearns the few settings it loses. Where the Battery Is

The 12 V battery sits in the engine bay, behind a cover. Lift the bonnet, prop it, and unclip or lift the plastic cover to reach the terminals. The negative (−) post carries the black earth lead and a minus marking; the positive (+) post sits under a red cap or flap. The diesel (CRDi) and petrol Santa Fe has no high-voltage system. On the hybrid and plug-in hybrid versions there is also an orange high-voltage system — never touch it; this guide is for the 12 V battery only, and nothing here asks you to go near the orange cabling.

Before You Start

• Switch the ignition fully off and take the smart key well clear so the car doesn’t stay awake.
• Turn everything off — lights, climate, wipers, radio — so nothing is drawing current as you disconnect.
• Note the radio presets you’ll want back, plus any seat and mirror memory positions.
• Wait a minute or two after switching off for the electronics to sleep before touching a terminal.
• Have the right spanner ready (typically a 10 mm), and wear gloves and eye protection.

Disconnecting

1. Switch the ignition off, remove the smart key and wait a minute for the electronics to sleep.
2. Disconnect the negative (−) terminal first, slacken the clamp, lift the lead off and tuck it aside so it can’t spring back onto the post.
3. If removing the battery, disconnect the positive (+) next, then release the hold-down clamp and lift the battery out keeping it upright.

Reconnecting & Re-teaching

1. Reconnect positive (+) first and nip up its clamp, then fit the negative (−) last and tighten it. Refit the cover.
2. Switch on and reset the clock; the radio usually reloads on its own.

The Santa Fe doesn’t need the battery coded — fit a like-for-like battery, reconnect in order, and re-teach the windows.

What You’ll Need to Reset Afterwards

Cutting the power clears learned settings rather than anything permanent. On the Santa Fe that usually means the clock, your radio presets, and the one-touch/anti-pinch windows, which stop auto-closing until re-taught. If your car has the panoramic sunroof, re-initialise it as well. Seat and mirror memory may need resetting, and the odd tyre-pressure or driver-assist warning can light briefly and then self-clear once the car has settled and been driven a short distance.

If a Warning Light Stays On

• Check both clamps are properly tight — a loose earth is the usual cause of odd behaviour afterwards.
• Take a short drive so the car can relearn and any transient warnings clear.
• Re-run the window re-initialise if one-touch or anti-pinch still isn’t working, and the sunroof routine if it’s fitted.
• If a light persists, rule out a genuinely tired or flat battery, and read any stored fault code to see what the car is reporting.
