Reset a Frozen Infotainment Screen

These instructions apply to the Isuzu D-Max Mk2 (TF) 2012-2020. For other models, please choose your vehicle here.

Last updated: June 12, 2026

If the touchscreen in your Isuzu D-Max (Mk2 RT, 2012–2020) has frozen — the display ignores your taps, the audio stalls, the screen goes black, or it hangs on the start-up logo — a forced restart usually clears it in under a minute. The higher-trim D-Max uses a Clarion/Pioneer-sourced touchscreen head unit with built-in navigation, and like any embedded computer it can lock up. Holding the Power knob reboots it without a workshop visit and without losing your settings.

Does your D-Max have a touchscreen?

Trim is the key. Base D-Max utes (SX and many fleet single-cabs) came with a simple double-DIN radio and no touch panel — nothing on those freezes in the way described here. LS-U, LS-T, LS-M and the navigation-equipped trims carry the touchscreen unit, which keeps one rotary Power/Volume knob (usually bottom-left of the faceplate). That knob is the reset control: a long hold cuts power to the unit’s processor and forces a clean restart.

Soft reset — hold the Power knob

  1. Park the ute, apply the handbrake and leave the ignition in ACC or ON so the screen has power. The engine does not need to run.
  2. Find the round Power/Volume knob on the faceplate.
  3. Press and hold it — keep pressing past the point where the sound mutes, around 10 seconds.
  4. The screen goes dark and the unit reboots to its logo. Release the knob.
  5. Wait 20–40 seconds for radio, Bluetooth and navigation to reload. The reboot is done.

Is a reboot safe? Will I lose data?

Yes, it is safe, and you lose nothing. The knob-hold restart clears only the unit’s temporary working memory. Paired phones, radio presets, saved navigation destinations, brightness and language all sit in permanent storage and survive. It is the same as restarting a phone rather than wiping it — repeat as often as you need.

If it stays frozen

  • Cycle the ignition fully. Switch the truck off, open the driver’s door, wait two minutes for the head unit to power down, then restart. A quick off/on may not drop power.
  • Check the map SD card. On navigation D-Max units a faulty or loose map SD card is a known cause of blank screens, freezing and reboot loops. Re-seat it; if the problem persists, the card may be corrupt and need replacing through Isuzu.
  • Pull the audio fuse. With the ignition off, open the cabin fuse box and remove the head-unit / AUDIO / ACC fuse for 30 seconds, then refit — a guaranteed hard power-down when the knob will not respond. Check the fuse-box lid for the correct circuit.
  • Disconnect the battery. As a last resort, disconnect the negative terminal for two to three minutes to reboot every module, then reset the clock.

Factory reset (erases data)

Reserve this for a unit that misbehaves after every reboot, or for selling the truck. With the system on, open Settings (or Menu → System) and look for Factory/Default settings or Reset all. Confirm to wipe paired devices, presets and saved destinations back to factory state. Always try the knob-hold soft reset and an SD-card re-seat first — together they cure the great majority of D-Max freezes without deleting anything.

Frequently Asked Questions

My D-Max SX has no touchscreen — how do I reset the radio? Base double-DIN radios have no touch panel and rarely freeze; if one locks up, pull the audio fuse for 30 seconds or briefly disconnect the battery to power-cycle it.

Which knob reboots the touchscreen? The round Power/Volume knob on the faceplate. Press and hold it about 10 seconds until the unit restarts.

The screen goes blank or reboots on its own — what causes that? On navigation units this is most often a failing map SD card. Re-seat it first; a corrupt card needs replacing through Isuzu.

Will rebooting delete my paired phone or presets? No. A knob-hold reboot only clears working memory; pairings, presets and favourites are stored permanently and remain.

Do I need the engine running to reboot? No. The ignition only needs to be in ACC or ON so the head unit is powered; the engine can stay off.
