Disconnect and Reconnect the Battery

These instructions apply to the Jaguar XE Mk1 (X760) 2015-Present.
For other models, please choose your vehicle here.

Disconnecting the 12 V battery on your Jaguar XE (2015–present) is well within reach of a confident owner, whether you are fitting a new battery, storing the car over winter, or working close to the airbags and seat-belt pretensioners. The XE runs a battery monitoring system (BMS) that tracks the battery’s state of charge and age so the alternator and stop/start behave sensibly, and it is worth knowing about before you start. It does not prevent a hands-on disconnection — it simply explains a couple of things you may see afterwards. Do it in the correct order and the car relearns cleanly.

Where the 12 V Battery Is

The XE keeps its 12 V battery under the bonnet in the engine bay, behind a cover. Release the cover and you will find the two terminals: the negative (−) post, generally with a black lead, and the positive (+), usually red and often protected by a hinged plastic cap. Clipped to the negative clamp is the small battery monitoring sensor (BMS) connector, which measures the current flowing in and out of the battery. Note how it sits so you can refit it exactly the same way.

Before You Start

  • Turn the ignition fully off, move the smart key well away from the car, and shut the doors so the electrical systems settle.
  • Switch off the headlights, climate and any accessories, and check no interior or boot lamp is left glowing.
  • Write down anything held in memory — radio presets, saved seat and mirror positions, and the clock — so you can restore it.
  • Give the modules a couple of minutes to power down after switching off before you touch a terminal.
  • Have the correct spanner to hand (usually a 10 mm), plus gloves and eye protection, and take off any metal watch or bracelet.

Disconnecting

  1. Double-check the ignition is off and the key is out of range.
  2. Loosen the clamp on the negative (−) terminal first and lift it clear of the post, easing the BMS connector away with it.
  3. Fold the negative lead back out of the way so it cannot flick onto the post again.
  4. If you are removing the battery, only now undo and lift off the positive (+) lead.

Working near airbags or pretensioners? Allow a minute or two after the negative is off before starting, so those circuits fully discharge.

Reconnecting

  1. Fit the positive (+) terminal first and tighten its clamp.
  2. Refit the negative (−) lead last, making sure the BMS connector clicks back onto its sensor exactly as before, then tighten.
  3. Confirm both clamps are firm — a loose terminal causes intermittent electrical gremlins — and switch the ignition on.

What You’ll Need to Reset Afterwards

With the battery disconnected the XE loses its short-term memory, so a few items need attention once power returns:

  • Clock and radio presets — re-enter the time and your saved stations.
  • Power windows — one-touch and anti-pinch are lost; re-initialise each window so auto up/down works again.
  • Panoramic roof — where fitted, re-initialise it if the auto function seems off after reconnection.
  • Seat and mirror memory — re-save your positions if they were stored.
  • Stop/start and the BMS — a new battery ideally needs registering with Jaguar diagnostic equipment so it is charged to the right profile; a like-for-like swap normally settles over a few drives, which is why stop/start can stay inactive at first.
  • A handful of warning lights may appear briefly and clear themselves once the car has been driven a short way.

If a Warning Light Stays On or the Car Feels Off

  • Recheck that both clamps and the BMS connector are fully seated and tight.
  • Drive the car a short distance with a few gentle turns so the windows, steering and stability systems relearn.
  • Repeat the window re-initialisation if a window won’t auto-close or keeps bouncing back.
  • If stop/start stays off for a long time, suspect a genuinely tired or low battery rather than the BMS still learning.
  • Anything that refuses to clear leaves a fault code — decode it on autodtcs.com.

Frequently Asked Questions

Where is the battery on a Jaguar XE?

Under the bonnet in the engine bay, behind a cover. Lift the cover to reach the negative and positive terminals; the battery monitoring sensor clips onto the negative clamp.

Which terminal do I remove first?

The negative (−) first when disconnecting, and reconnect it last. When reassembling, the positive (+) goes on first, then the negative with its BMS connector.

Does a new battery need coding on the XE?

Ideally yes — the BMS should be registered with Jaguar equipment so it charges the new battery correctly. A like-for-like swap usually runs fine and settles after a few drives, though stop/start may stay off in the meantime.

What do I need to reset afterwards?

The power windows re-initialise, and you re-enter the clock, radio presets and any saved seat or mirror positions. The BMS relearns the battery state as you drive.

Will disconnecting the battery reset the service light or clear codes?

It can clear some temporary codes, but it does not reset the service interval, and any live fault will log again. Address the underlying cause rather than relying on a battery pull.

Can I jump-start the XE instead of disconnecting?

If you only need to get moving after a flat battery, yes — use the under-bonnet jump points, with no need to disconnect anything. Disconnecting is only for renewal, storage or working near the airbags.

If a warning light stays on after reconnecting the battery, look up the stored code on autodtcs.com.
