If your diesel Jaguar XE (2015–present) is warning that AdBlue (diesel exhaust fluid) is low — often with a countdown of miles until the engine won’t restart — you can top it up yourself in a couple of minutes. It’s just pouring fluid into a filler; here’s how to do it cleanly.
What AdBlue Is
AdBlue is a urea solution the diesel XE injects into the exhaust to cut NOx emissions. It’s used up as you drive, and the car warns you in stages. If it runs completely empty the engine won’t restart until it’s refilled, so don’t ignore the warning.
Topping Up the AdBlue
- Buy AdBlue (sold in 1.5–10 litre bottles, often with a no-spill spout). Any AdBlue/DEF to spec ISO 22241 is fine.
- Find the AdBlue filler — on the XE it’s usually next to the diesel filler (blue cap) or in the boot, depending on year.
- Remove the AdBlue filler cap.
- Refill from the bottle, adding the contents steadily. Around 1.9 litres (one typical bottle) usually clears a low warning, but you can add more.
- Refit the filler cap until it clicks.
- Switch the ignition on (or start and drive a short distance) so the system re-reads the level — the warning clears once it registers the new fluid, sometimes after a few miles.
Tips and Troubleshooting
- Avoid spills on paint — AdBlue is corrosive to some finishes; rinse any spills with water.
- If the engine already won’t start, add several litres and wait a few minutes (ignition on) before it will crank again.
- Warning won’t clear after a top-up? Drive a few miles; if it persists, an AdBlue-system fault may be logged — look it up on autodtcs.com.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can I top up AdBlue myself on a Jaguar XE?
Yes — remove the AdBlue filler cap and pour in AdBlue from a bottle, then refit the cap and switch on so the system re-reads the level.
Where is the AdBlue filler on an XE?
Usually beside the diesel filler (blue cap) or in the boot, depending on the model year.
How much should I add?
At least one bottle (around 1.9 litres) to clear a low warning; you can add more.
What happens if it runs out?
The engine won’t restart until you refill — add several litres and allow a short wait before starting.
Only the diesel XE uses AdBlue; petrol models don’t have it. If a related warning light is on, decode it on autodtcs.com.
