To change the wiper blades or lift them off the screen in winter on your Jaguar XE (2015–present), you first need to put the wipers into their service position — at rest they park below the bonnet line where you can’t reach them. It’s a quick stalk sequence, no tools. This is also called the maintenance or winter position, and it is a normal built-in feature rather than a fault or a warning.

Why There’s a Service Position
When the XE switches off, its wiper arms drop to a low park under the trailing edge of the bonnet and the scuttle trim. That’s where you want them for driving — out of your line of sight and sheltered from the airflow — but it leaves barely any room to lift a blade. Pull an arm straight up from that parked spot and the tip catches the bonnet lip, so it’s easy to bend the arm, chip the paint, or crack the glass if the arm springs back.
The service position raises the arms up the screen to a near-upright stance, clear of the surround, so they fold forward on their hinges and you have room to change or clean the blades. In cold weather it also lets you stand the arms off the glass so the blades don’t freeze flat overnight and tear the first time you switch them on.
Before You Begin
- Make sure the bonnet is closed — the XE blocks the service position while the bonnet is raised.
- Let the wipers finish and settle at their rest position before you begin the sequence.
- If the blades are iced to the glass, free them gently first so the motor doesn’t stall against them.
- Have the new blades unpacked and ready so an arm never sits sprung-up for long.
- Work one arm at a time and support a bare arm so it can’t drop back onto the screen.
Setting the Service Position
- Make sure the wipers are at their rest position and the bonnet is closed.
- Turn the ignition off, then turn the ignition ON and OFF again.
- Push the wiper stalk down and hold it, then turn the ignition on.
- The wipers move up to the service position — you can now lift the arms off the glass to change or clean the blades.
The order is what makes it work: the car is looking for the stalk held down at the moment the ignition comes on. Turn the ignition on first and then reach for the stalk, and it just reads as an ordinary wipe.
Returning the Wipers to Normal
Fold each arm back down flat onto the screen first, then turn the ignition off — the wipers return to their normal parked position below the bonnet line. Don’t push the arms back into park by hand against the motor, as forcing them can strain the linkage or upset where they settle at rest.
If It Doesn’t Work
- Bonnet open. The service position is inhibited with the bonnet up — close it fully and try again.
- Wrong order. Hold the stalk down before and as you turn the ignition on, not after.
- Wipers weren’t parked. Let them finish their sweep and settle at rest before starting the ignition cycle.
- Blades frozen down. Iced-on blades can stall the motor; free them from the glass first.
- Ignition cycle skipped. Do the off, then on-and-off again, before the hold-and-on step — don’t shortcut it.
- Still nothing? Switch fully off and run the whole sequence again cleanly from the top.
Changing the Blades
With an arm raised, hold it so it can’t spring back and hit the screen — a bare arm falling onto cold glass can crack it. XE blades typically use a clip or hook fitting where the blade meets the arm: release the catch, slide the old blade off, and press the new one on until it locks with a click. Confirm it’s seated before you move on, and lower each arm gently onto the glass once both are done rather than letting it snap down.
Frequently Asked Questions
How do I put the XE wipers in service position?
With the bonnet closed and the wipers parked, turn the ignition off, then on and off again. Push the wiper stalk down and hold it while you turn the ignition on. The arms rise up the screen, and you can then lift them off the glass.
Do I need any tools?
No. It’s done entirely from the wiper stalk and the ignition — no menus or workshop equipment. You only need your hands and, if you’re renewing them, the replacement blades.
How do I get the wipers back down?
Fold the arms flat onto the screen, then turn the ignition off. The wipers return to their parked position on their own. Don’t force them back by hand, which works against the motor.
Can I just lift the wipers from where they park?
It’s better not to. Parked, the arm tips sit under the bonnet line, so lifting there risks bending an arm or marking the paint. The service position lifts them clear first, which is exactly what it’s for.
Why won’t it enter the service position?
Usually the bonnet is open or the steps are out of order. Close the bonnet, make sure the wipers are parked, and hold the stalk down as you turn the ignition on rather than after.
Does this reset anything on the car?
No. The service position only moves the wiper arms to a maintenance park point. It doesn’t clear service reminders or touch any other system. The service light is a separate reset if you’re working through a service.
