These instructions apply to the Jaguar XF Mk2 (X260) 2015-Present.

The Jaguar XF (X260, 2015–Present) uses passive keyless entry and a push-button START/STOP: with the smart key on you, the executive saloon senses it and starts at a touch. When the fob’s coin cell goes flat the key stops transmitting, so the XF can no longer detect it across the cabin — the door handles will not unlock and the start button seems dead. Nothing has actually broken. Every XF key has a battery-free backup, and once you know where to hold it you are moving inside a minute.

Start the XF With a Dead Fob Battery
The transponder chip in the key draws no power from the coin cell. Held against the reader, the car energises and reads it directly — the same principle as a traditional immobiliser key.
- Sit in the driver’s seat with the key in hand and your foot pressed firmly on the brake.
- Find the key symbol on the steering column shroud. With a manual column the reader is on the underside; with an electric column it sits on the left side, shown by three parallel lines.
- Hold the fob flat against that mark, buttons facing outward.
- Keeping the key in place, press the START/STOP button. The engine should start.
- Once it is running, pocket the key for the rest of the journey.
If it does not fire first time, nudge the fob a few millimetres and try again to find the antenna sweet spot. From the 2021 model year the XF switched to the newer Smart Key, which is read against an indent on the underside of the dashboard below the switches rather than on the column — hold it flat there, buttons facing out, then press START/STOP.
Unlock the Door With the Hidden Emergency Key
If the fob is too flat to unlock the XF remotely, the key hides a metal blade for the door lock.
- Slide or press the release on the side of the smart key and draw the emergency blade out.
- At the driver’s door, the lock barrel is hidden under a cap at the rear edge of the handle, nearest the door pillar.
- Insert the blade tip into the slot and lever the cap off to reveal the lock cylinder.
- Turn the blade in the cylinder to unlock, then refit the handle cap.
Opening the door this way will usually trigger the alarm. That is expected — with a dead fob the XF gets no radio confirmation of a valid key, so it treats the entry as a break-in. It stops the moment you complete the reader start above.
Why the Immobiliser Still Lets You In
The XF immobiliser is keyed to the passive transponder, not the radio signal. Holding the fob on the reader proves a genuine key is present, so the engine control unit releases ignition and fuelling. A flat coin cell never strands you — this is exactly the fallback Jaguar designed in.
Replace the Fob Battery
The XF smart key takes a single CR2032 3V lithium coin cell. Remove the emergency blade, split the fob halves at the seam, lift out the old cell, and seat the replacement with the “+” mark matching the holder. Press the case shut and full radio range returns. Keep a spare CR2032 in the car so you never repeat the dead-fob routine.
Frequently Asked Questions
Where is the start reader on the XF? On the steering column shroud — underside for a manual column, left side for an electric column, marked with three parallel lines. The 2021-on XF moved it to an indent under the dashboard.
Why did the alarm sound when I used the blade? The dead fob cannot transmit the valid-key signal, so the XF reads the door opening as forced entry. It silences as soon as the engine starts from the reader.
What battery does the XF key use? One CR2032 lithium coin cell, available anywhere coin cells are sold.
Where is the hidden keyhole on the XF? Under a cap at the rear edge of the driver’s door handle; lever the cap off with the blade to reach the cylinder.
Can I drive after a dead-fob start? Yes, the XF runs for the whole trip, but fit a fresh battery before switching off so the key works normally again.
If a dashboard warning persisted after the alarm cleared, you can look the code up at autodtcs.com before booking any diagnosis.
