Start the Car With a Dead Key Fob Battery

The Jaguar XF (X260, 2015–Present) uses passive keyless entry and a push-button START/STOP: with the smart key on you, the executive saloon senses it and starts at a touch. When the fob’s coin cell goes flat the key stops transmitting, so the XF can no longer detect it across the cabin — the door handles will not unlock and the start button seems dead. 4. Keeping the key in place, press the START/STOP button. The engine should start.

Unlock the Door With the Hidden Emergency Key

If the fob is too flat to unlock the XF remotely, the key hides a metal blade for the door lock.

1. Slide or press the release on the side of the smart key and draw the emergency blade out.
2. At the driver’s door, the lock barrel is hidden under a cap at the rear edge of the handle, nearest the door pillar.
3. Insert the blade tip into the slot and lever the cap off to reveal the lock cylinder.
4. Turn the blade in the cylinder to unlock, then refit the handle cap.

Opening the door this way will usually trigger the alarm. That is expected — with a dead fob the XF gets no radio confirmation of a valid key, so it treats the entry as a break-in. It stops the moment you complete the reader start above.

Why the Immobiliser Still Lets You In

The XF immobiliser is keyed to the passive transponder, not the radio signal. Holding the fob on the reader proves a genuine key is present, so the engine control unit releases ignition and fuelling. A flat coin cell never strands you — this is exactly the fallback Jaguar designed in.

Replace the Fob Battery

The XF smart key takes a single CR2032 3V lithium coin cell. Remove the emergency blade, split the fob halves at the seam, lift out the old cell, and seat the replacement with the “+” mark matching the holder. Press the case shut and full radio range returns. Keep a spare CR2032 in the car so you never repeat the dead-fob routine.
