If the tyre-pressure warning has come on in your Jeep Compass (2007–2014) after you’ve adjusted the pressures or changed a wheel, this generation uses an indirect system — there are no sensors in the wheels, so you reset it by setting the pressures and driving. It is a routine calibration, not a sign that something has broken, and on this Compass it can be done on the driveway in a few minutes plus a short drive. Here’s how.

How the System Works

The indirect TPMS on this Compass has no pressure sensors inside the wheels. Instead it watches the wheel-speed signals the ABS already produces: a tyre that is losing air has a slightly smaller rolling radius, so it turns marginally faster than the others, and the car flags that difference as a low tyre. Because it is comparing wheels against a stored baseline rather than reading an actual psi figure, it has no idea what ‘correct’ is until you tell it — which is exactly what the reset does. After any pressure change you set the correct pressures and let the car relearn them on the move.

Before You Begin

  • Check the tyres cold — before driving, or at least a couple of hours after, so warm-up doesn’t inflate the reading.
  • Use the pressures on the placard in the driver’s door shut, matching the load if a laden/heavy figure is listed.
  • Don’t forget to check the spare if it is a full-size wheel that gets rotated into use.
  • Have a working gauge handy and set all four before you begin the learn drive.
  • Plan a route where you can hold a steady speed — the relearn needs continuous driving, not stop-start town traffic.

Resetting the System

  1. Park level and set all four tyres to the correct cold pressures (placard in the driver’s door shut).
  2. Drive the vehicle for about 20 minutes at a steady speed above roughly 25 km/h (15 mph).
  3. The new pressures are stored as the baseline and the warning clears.

If the Warning Stays On

  • Recheck every tyre — a single corner a few psi low keeps the warning lit.
  • Complete the learn drive — a couple of short trips may not add up to enough continuous running.
  • After a wheel change or rotation, make sure pressures are exactly to spec before you drive, so the new baseline is right.
  • Check the spare or space-saver if it has been fitted — a space-saver runs at a much higher pressure and will read as odd.
  • Cold snap? A sharp overnight temperature drop can lower every tyre enough to trip it; top up and re-run the drive.

After the Reset

Once the drive is complete the warning goes out and stays out for normal running. From then on the system judges every tyre against the baseline you just set, so it should only light again if a tyre genuinely drops below it. It is worth re-running the reset each time you deliberately change the pressures — for a heavy load, say — so the baseline always matches what is actually in the tyres.

Usually one tyre is still below spec, or the learn drive wasn’t long or steady enough for the system to settle on the new baseline. Re-check all four cold, confirm the spare isn’t a mismatched space-saver, and complete a continuous drive of around 20 minutes before deciding anything is wrong.

Do I need a tool?

No. Because the system is indirect, setting the pressures and driving is all that’s needed — there is no sensor to program with a TPMS tool. A diagnostic scanner only comes into play if a fault has actually been logged and the warning refuses to clear with everything set correctly.

The light came on in cold weather — is that normal?

Yes. Air contracts as it cools, so a cold morning can lower every tyre by a few psi and cross the threshold. Top each tyre back up to the placard figure while cold and re-run the learn drive; the light should not return unless a tyre is genuinely losing air.

Do I have to reset it after rotating the tyres?

It is good practice. Rotation changes which wheel sits where, so setting the pressures correctly and re-running the drive gives the system a clean baseline. Skipping it usually isn’t harmful, but it can leave the monitor over-sensitive until the next reset.
