Replace the Engine Air Filter

These instructions apply to the Jeep Renegade Mk1 (BU) 2014-Present. For other models, please choose your vehicle here.

Replacing the engine air filter on your Jeep Renegade (2014–present) is one of the easiest DIY services — a clogged filter chokes the engine and hurts economy, and a new one costs a fraction of a garage’s price. All you need is a screwdriver and a socket/spanner. Here’s how it’s done on the BU Renegade.

What You’ll Need

  • The correct air filter for your engine (the petrol, diesel and e-Torque Renegades use different filters — quote your registration when buying).
  • A screwdriver and a socket wrench (or spanner), plus a vacuum cleaner and a rag.

Replacing the Air Filter

  1. Remove the engine cover (it usually pulls up off its mounts).
  2. On turbo engines, loosen the hose clamp and disconnect the air inlet hose from the airbox.
  3. Remove the screws securing the air filter cover, then slide the cover forward and lift the access cover off.
  4. Lift out the old air filter. Note which way round it sits.
  5. Clean the housing — vacuum out any leaves and dirt, and wipe the sealing faces so the new filter seats cleanly. Don’t let debris fall into the inlet.
  6. Fit the new filter the same way round, then refit the access cover, the cover screws, the inlet hose and clamp, and the engine cover.

Tips and Troubleshooting

  • Seat the filter squarely — a filter that isn’t flat in its frame lets unfiltered air past and can cause a rough idle or airflow fault.
  • Don’t over-tighten the hose clamp or cover screws — they only need to be snug.
  • Rough running or a check-engine light afterwards? Re-check the inlet hose is fully seated and clamped; a stored code can be read on autodtcs.com.

Frequently Asked Questions

How often should I change the Renegade air filter?

Typically every 2–4 years or per the service schedule, sooner in dusty conditions — check your handbook for your engine’s interval.

Which air filter does my Renegade need?

It depends on the engine — quote your registration or VIN when buying, as the petrol, diesel and e-Torque units differ.

Do I need any special tools?

No — a screwdriver and a socket/spanner are enough; the cover is held by clips and screws.

Can I clean the old filter instead of replacing it?

You can vacuum loose dirt as a stop-gap, but a paper panel filter should be renewed, not washed.
