If the electric sunroof on your Jeep Renegade (2014–present) has stopped opening or closing with one touch — usually after the battery has been disconnected or run flat — it needs re-initialising so it relearns its end positions. It’s an owner job that takes a minute. There are two methods depending on your Renegade; use the one that matches.
When You Need This
The sunroof motor loses its calibration when the 12 V battery is disconnected or goes flat, leaving the panel working only while you hold the switch (and the anti-trap may behave oddly). Re-initialising restores normal one-touch operation.
Method 1 (Button)
- Switch the ignition on.
- Press and hold the sunroof switch in the CLOSE direction until the roof is fully closed; keep holding for about 30 seconds, then a further 5 seconds until you hear a click, and release.
- Within 5 seconds, press and hold the switch again — the sunroof completes a full open/close cycle. Release the switch.
- The sunroof is initialised.
Method 2 (Ignition-key variant)
- Ignition on; pull the switch to fully close the roof and hold until closed.
- Turn the ignition to STOP, wait 10 seconds, then turn it to MAR (on).
- Pull and hold the switch until you hear a noise, then release.
- Within 5 seconds, pull and hold the switch again for a full open/close cycle, then release.
If It Won’t Initialise
- Hold the switch for the full times stated — the roof needs to reach and hold its end stops.
- Clear any debris from the roof seals/track so it can run fully.
- Still faulty? A sunroof-module issue can store a code — look it up on autodtcs.com.
Frequently Asked Questions
Why did my Renegade sunroof stop working with one touch?
Its calibration is lost when the battery is disconnected or goes flat — the re-initialisation restores it.
Which method should I use?
Try Method 1 (button) first; if your Renegade doesn’t respond, use Method 2 with the ignition STOP/MAR step.
Do I need tools?
No — it’s done from the sunroof switch with the ignition on.
Do I have to re-initialise after every battery disconnection?
If the one-touch function is lost, yes — it’s a quick step to redo.
Re-initialising as part of a battery job? See our Renegade battery disconnect/reconnect guide.
