Reset the Tyre Pressure Monitor (TPMS)

If the tyre-pressure warning has come on in your Jeep Wrangler (2007–2018) — the JK — after you’ve adjusted the pressures or changed a wheel, this generation uses an indirect system — there are no sensors in the wheels, so you reset it by setting the pressures and driving. This is normal after a top-up, a cold night, or a tyre swap, and the light on its own is a prompt to check pressures rather than a sign of a fault. Here’s how.

How the System Works

The indirect TPMS reads wheel-speed data to spot a tyre going soft, so after any pressure change you set the correct pressures and let the car relearn them on the move.

A softer tyre has a slightly smaller rolling radius and turns marginally faster than the others, and the JK’s system watches for that difference through the ABS wheel-speed sensors. Because it compares wheels against each other rather than reading a number, it needs a correct, even baseline first — which is exactly what the reset drive establishes. It also means the JK can’t display a per-tyre pressure, only warn when one corner drifts out of step.

Before You Start

  • Set pressures cold — before driving, so a warmed tyre doesn’t read falsely high and mask a low corner.
  • Use the door-shut placard figure, not the maximum stamped on the tyre sidewall.
  • If you run larger off-road tyres, set them to the pressure recommended for that size and use, then reset to that baseline.
  • Don’t forget the full-size spare on the tailgate if it’s part of the monitored set.
  • Park level and check all four before you start the learn drive.

Resetting the System

  1. Park level and set all four tyres to the correct cold pressures (placard in the driver’s door shut — check the figure if you’ve fitted larger off-road tyres).
  2. Drive the vehicle for about 20 minutes at a steady speed above roughly 25 km/h (15 mph).
  3. The new pressures are stored as the baseline and the warning clears.

If the Warning Stays On

  • Recheck every tyre — one below spec keeps the warning on. Don’t forget the full-size spare on the tailgate if it’s monitored.
  • Complete the learn drive — short trips may not be enough.
  • After fitting bigger tyres, set them to the recommended pressure for that size before driving.
  • Look for a slow puncture — if one corner keeps falling, check for a nail or a leaking valve before assuming the system is at fault.
  • After airing down for the trail, the light will show until you re-inflate to the road baseline and drive.

What to Expect After

Once all four are set correctly and the learn drive is complete, the warning goes out and stays off for the rest of your journey — there’s nothing else to press. As the JK is often aired down for off-roading and back up for the road, it’s worth a quick pressure check and a short steady drive whenever you change how the tyres are set.
