These instructions apply to the Jeep Wrangler Mk4 (JL) 2018-Present.

When the remote on a Jeep Wrangler JL (2018–present) works only from arm’s length, ignores the odd button press, or throws a “Key Fob Battery Low” warning in the cluster, the cause is nearly always the coin cell inside the fob rather than anything wrong with the truck. The JL comes with one of two remotes depending on trim: the flat Keyless Enter-N-Go proximity fob that most Sahara, Rubicon, 4xe and 392 owners carry, and the fold-out remote-head “flip” key fitted to base Sport models without passive entry. Both take the same battery, and swapping it is a two-minute driveway job. Here is what you need, how each fob opens, and why a brand-new key is the one part you can’t finish at home.

How to Tell the Fob Battery Is Dying

  • Shrinking range. You have to stand right at the door — or hold the fob against the handle — before it locks or unlocks. This is almost always the first sign on a JL.
  • A “Key Fob Battery Low” message. The Wrangler’s instrument-cluster display shows a low-key-battery warning while the truck can still read the fob but the cell is fading. Don’t ignore it — it usually appears weeks before the remote quits.
  • Push-button start needs the fob held close. On proximity models, if the truck only cranks when you hold the fob against the START/STOP button, the cell is on its way out.
  • Cold-weather dropouts. A near-flat lithium cell loses voltage in the cold, so the remote may work in a warm garage but fail on a frosty morning.

A JL fob battery typically lasts two to four years — a proximity fob left near the truck wakes constantly and drains a little faster than a flip key in your pocket. If yours is a few years old and showing any of the above, fit a fresh cell before suspecting the receiver or immobiliser.

The Battery You Need

Every stock Wrangler JL fob — proximity or flip — uses a single CR2450 3-volt lithium coin cell. This trips people up: the older Wrangler JK (2007–2018) used the thinner CR2032, and plenty of generic guides still quote that code for “Wrangler.” The JL’s cell is different. The CR2450 is noticeably wider and thicker (24.5 mm across, 5 mm tall) and the two are not interchangeable — a CR2032 rattles loose in the deeper JL holder and gives poor range. Buy a good-quality branded CR2450, and if in doubt, read the code printed on the cell you take out and match it exactly.

Method 1 — Proximity (Keyless Enter-N-Go) Fob

This is the flat, rectangular fob with LOCK, UNLOCK, panic and (on most trims) remote-start buttons, used with push-button start.

  1. Release the emergency key blade. Slide or press the small latch at the top of the fob and pull the mechanical key blade straight out. This blade unlocks the driver’s door if the truck ever won’t.
  2. Split the case. Insert the tip of the emergency blade, a coin, or a flat plastic pry tool into the slot the blade left behind and gently twist to pop the two halves apart. Work around the seam rather than forcing one spot — the case is plastic and the clips are small.
  3. Lift out the old cell. Note which way it faces before you touch it — take a quick photo on your phone if you like.
  4. Fit the new CR2450 the same way round as the one you removed, seated fully under its retaining clip so it sits flush. The deeper JL holder needs the thicker cell pressed home completely or the halves won’t close.
  5. Snap the case back together, then slide the emergency key blade home until it latches.

Method 2 — Remote-Head “Flip” Key (Base Sport)

Sport and Sport S models without Keyless Enter-N-Go get a fold-out key: press the button and the metal blade springs out to turn in the ignition.

  1. Fold the blade closed so the fob is easier to hold.
  2. Pry the two halves apart at the seam with a flat plastic tool or a coin, easing around the edge until the back cover releases. There is no screw on the JL remote — it’s a clip-together case.
  3. Swap the CR2450, matching the orientation of the old cell exactly, and make sure it’s fully seated under the clip.
  4. Click the case shut and test every button.

⚠️ Get the polarity right. The correct orientation is stamped inside the battery holder, but published guides disagree on whether the JL cell sits positive-up or positive-down — so don’t rely on a generic rule. Always copy the exact way the cell you removed was facing. A coin cell fitted the wrong way round won’t power the fob and can slowly discharge against the contacts.

Make Sure It Took

Stand back a few metres and lock, then unlock, the Wrangler. Full range should return straight away. If the cluster was showing “Key Fob Battery Low,” the message clears once the truck reads a healthy fob — sometimes instantly, sometimes after one drive cycle. On proximity models, confirm passive entry and push-button start both work without holding the fob against anything.

If a Fresh Cell Doesn’t Fix It

  • Re-check orientation and seating. A cell in backwards, or a CR2032 mistaken for a CR2450, is by far the most common reason a “new” battery does nothing. The thicker CR2450 must sit flush under its clip.
  • Wipe the contacts. Finger grease or light corrosion on the terminals causes dropouts — clean them with a dry cloth.
  • Message still showing? It can take a couple of fob reads to clear. Rarely, a weak vehicle 12 V battery makes the JL slow to wake and imitates key faults; if the truck itself is sluggish, that’s worth checking separately.

New Key or Spare — Why It’s a Dealer Job

Changing the coin cell keeps the fob’s existing coding, so nothing needs reprogramming. Adding a spare or replacing a lost key is a different story. From 2018 the JL uses FCA’s Security Gateway module, which locks out casual aftermarket programming — a new fob has to be cut to the truck’s VIN and married to the immobiliser with authorised diagnostic access. That makes it a job for a Jeep dealer or an established auto-locksmith, not something you can pair from the driver’s seat. Keep the battery in your spare fresh too, so you’re never down to a single working key.

Frequently Asked Questions

What battery does a Jeep Wrangler JL key fob take?

A single CR2450 3-volt lithium coin cell, for both the proximity fob and the base flip key. Note this is not the CR2032 used by the older JK Wrangler — the two cells are different sizes, and a CR2032 won’t hold contact reliably in the deeper JL holder.

Which way up does the battery go?

Match the orientation of the cell you removed — the correct way is marked inside the holder. Guides disagree on positive-up versus positive-down for the JL, so copy the old one rather than guessing.

Do I need to reprogram the fob after a battery change?

No. Swapping the cell doesn’t affect the coding, so the fob works immediately. Only a brand-new key needs programming, and that requires dealer-level access.

How long should a JL fob battery last?

Around two to four years. A proximity fob parked near the truck wakes more often and tends to run down a little sooner than a flip key kept in your pocket.

Can I still drive the Wrangler if the fob battery is completely dead?

Yes. Use the emergency key blade stored in the fob to unlock the driver’s door, then hold the fob directly against the START/STOP button to start the engine — the JL’s passive backup reads the transponder at close range even with a flat cell, so a dead battery won’t strand you.

If the remote died suddenly right after the truck’s 12 V battery was disconnected — rather than fading over weeks — the issue is more likely the pairing or a stored fault than the coin cell. You can look up what any related code means on autodtcs.com.
