Reset a Frozen Infotainment Screen

These instructions apply to the Jeep Wrangler Mk4 (JL) 2018-Present.

If the Uconnect touchscreen in your Jeep Wrangler (JL, 2018–Present) has frozen on the Jeep logo, gone black, or stopped taking taps, you can force a reboot from the driver’s seat in under a minute. The JL spans two Uconnect generations, so the exact combo depends on your year and screen — but the soft reboot keeps every paired phone, preset and setting on both.

How to force a soft reset of the Jeep Wrangler Mk4 infotainment screen without losing your saved settings.

Which Uconnect is in your Wrangler JL

  • Uconnect 4 / 4C (2018 to roughly 2023, 5.0in / 7.0in / 8.4in) — has a real volume knob left and tuner knob right. Reboots with the two-knob hold.
  • Uconnect 5 (later facelift cars, 12.3in glass panel) — capacitive screen, no tuner knob. Reboots with the volume buttons held together.

Two rotary knobs flanking the screen means Uconnect 4; a tall glass display with no tuner knob means Uconnect 5.

Soft reset — Uconnect 4 (knobs, keeps all your data)

  1. Put the Wrangler in Park and turn the ignition to RUN (press Start without the brake to reach RUN on keyless cars).
  2. Press and hold the volume knob (left) and the tuner knob (right) at the same time.
  3. Hold for 10 to 20 seconds — do not release early.
  4. The screen flashes the Jeep logo and goes dark. Release the knobs.
  5. Wait about 30–60 seconds for the full reboot before touching the screen.

Soft reset — Uconnect 5 (glass screen)

  1. With the car in Park and ignition in RUN, press and hold Volume Up and Volume Down together for about 10 to 12 seconds.
  2. Release when the screen shows “Restarting…” or blanks, then let it boot back up.

This is safe — no data loss

The knob (or volume-button) reboot is the factory soft reset. It restarts only the infotainment software, so Bluetooth pairings, your phone book, radio presets, off-road pages, navigation favourites and display settings are all kept. The procedure erases nothing.

If it stays frozen

  • Retry the hold and count a full 20 seconds — releasing too soon is the usual reason it appears to fail.
  • Turn the Wrangler fully off, open the driver’s door, wait 2–3 minutes so the radio module sleeps, then restart.
  • Alternative on Uconnect 4: hold the Power and Tune buttons together for about 15 seconds, release, then press Power again to reboot.
  • Check for a pending Uconnect software update — JL units that freeze or black out repeatedly are often one update behind.
  • Last resort on Uconnect 4: pull radio fuse F97 for a few seconds (verify against your owner’s manual fuse chart), or disconnect the negative battery terminal for 15 minutes. On the 4xe, use the 12V terminal and observe high-voltage safety steps.

Factory reset (erases your data)

Only use this if a soft reboot will not hold. It wipes pairings, presets and personal settings.

  • Uconnect 4: press and hold the temperature Up and Down buttons together for about 5 seconds until a service menu appears, then select Reset to Factory Settings and wait ~30 seconds.
  • Uconnect 5: tap Vehicle / Settings → Reset → Factory Reset (Restore Factory Defaults) on the touchscreen and confirm.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does the knob reset erase my settings on the Wrangler JL?

No. The two-knob soft reboot keeps Bluetooth pairings, presets, off-road pages and preferences. Only a factory reset clears them.

My JL has a big glass screen and no tuner knob — how do I reboot it?

That is Uconnect 5. Hold Volume Up and Volume Down together for about 10–12 seconds. The tuner-knob method only applies to the earlier Uconnect 4 cars.

What is fuse F97 and when should I pull it?

On many Uconnect 4 JLs, F97 feeds the radio. Pulling it for a few seconds force-cuts power to the head unit when the screen reset is ignored. Always confirm the fuse number on your own car’s fuse legend before pulling it.

My Wrangler screen keeps blacking out then coming back. Why?

Repeated black-outs usually point to a software bug or a weak 12V battery (Wranglers are hard on batteries). Check for a Uconnect update and have the battery load-tested.

Can I reset the screen while driving the JL?

Do it parked. The display and reversing camera blank during the restart, so it is not safe on the move.

If a warning light came on at the same time as the screen glitch, decode the trouble code at autodtcs.com first to rule out an electrical fault before blaming the infotainment.
