Set the Wiper Service Position

To change the wiper blades or lift them off the glass in winter on a Kia Sorento Mk4 (MQ4, 2020–present), the arms need to be in their service position — standing up clear of the bonnet edge. The service position — some owners call it the maintenance or winter position — is simply a mode that walks the Sorento’s wiper arms up to the top of their sweep and holds them there, well clear of the bonnet. You reach for it in a few everyday situations: when a blade has started to smear or judder and it’s time to fit a fresh one, when snow or a hard frost is forecast and you want to stand the arms up so the rubber doesn’t freeze flat to the screen overnight, and when you’re clearing wet leaves or grit out of the scuttle channel at the base of the windscreen. Why You Need the Service Position

Like most modern SUVs, the Sorento parks its wiper arms right down at the bottom of the glass, tucked under the lip of the bonnet and the plastic scuttle trim. That keeps them out of your eyeline and out of the airflow when they’re not in use, but it also means there’s no room to swing an arm up from its resting spot. Try to haul one up cold and you’re levering it against the bonnet edge: it’s easy to tweak the arm, pop a spline on the splined shaft, or scuff the paint and trim. The service position exists so the wiper motor lifts the arms clear for you first, giving full travel and a safe gap to work in.

Before You Start

• Make sure the bonnet is fully closed and latched — the arms swing up into the space the bonnet would otherwise occupy.

Returning Them to Park

Fold the arms back onto the glass, then switch the ignition on and operate the wipers once — they return to the normal parked position. Do this before you drive off; leaving the arms standing upright and then setting the wipers going at speed can slap them back down hard against the glass.

If the Wipers Won’t Lift

• You missed the 20-second window — switch off and try again promptly, before the electrics settle.
• Hold the MIST position a full 2 seconds — a quick flick just does a single wipe instead of arming the mode.
• The bonnet is open or not fully latched — shut it properly and retry.
• The car isn’t fully off — make sure it’s switched off rather than sitting in an accessory state.
• The blades are iced to the glass — free them first, then repeat.

Changing the Blades and What to Expect

With an arm raised, keep a hand on it — the arms are spring-loaded and will snap back onto the glass if they slip, which can chip or crack the screen. The Sorento uses a common clip-style fitting where the blade clicks onto a hook or bayonet on the arm; release the catch, slide the old blade off along the arm, and clip the new one on until it locks. Check it’s properly seated, then lower the arm gently rather than letting it drop. Once both blades are done, return the wipers to park as above.
