Home/Land Rover/Range Rover Evoque/Mk1 (L538) 2011-2019/Disconnect and Reconnect the Battery

Disconnect and Reconnect the Battery

These instructions apply to the Land Rover Range Rover Evoque Mk1 (L538) 2011-2019. For other models, please choose your vehicle here.

Last updated: June 7, 2026

Disconnecting the 12 V battery on your Range Rover Evoque (2011–2019) — to fit a new one, store the car, or work near the airbags — is a DIY job, but the Evoque has a battery monitoring system (BMS) that’s worth understanding before you start. Here’s the safe sequence.

Before You Disconnect

The 12 V battery is under the bonnet (engine bay), behind a cover.

  1. Switch the ignition off and note your presets and personal settings.
  2. Ensure all electrical consumers are switched off.
  3. Disconnect the negative (−) terminal first, then the positive.

Working near airbags or pretensioners? Wait 1 minute after disconnecting before starting.

Reconnecting

  1. Reconnect the earth cables, then the positive first and negative last, and refit the battery monitoring system (BMS) connector.
  2. Switch the ignition on and re-initialise the power windows (one-touch is lost).
  3. Re-enter the clock and settings.

Fitting a new or different battery? The BMS ideally needs resetting/registering with Land Rover diagnostic equipment so it charges the new battery correctly. A like-for-like swap will usually settle after a few drives, but the BMS reset is the proper step.

If Something Isn’t Right Afterwards

  • Windows won’t auto-close — run the window re-initialisation.
  • Warning lights after reconnection often clear after a short drive; a persistent one stores a code (decode on autodtcs.com).
  • Stop/start not working afterwards is usually the BMS still learning the battery state.

Frequently Asked Questions

Where is the battery on a Range Rover Evoque?

Under the bonnet in the engine bay, behind a cover.

Which terminal first?

Negative (−) off first, reconnect it last.

Do I need to register a new battery?

Ideally yes — the BMS should be reset/registered with Land Rover equipment so it charges a new battery correctly.

What needs resetting afterwards?

The power windows re-initialise, plus the clock and presets; the BMS relearns the battery state.

If a warning light stays on after reconnecting, look up the code on autodtcs.com.
