The Lexus NX (Z1, 2014–2021) uses the Smart Access keyless system, so when the smart key’s coin-cell battery goes flat the proximity sensors and remote buttons stop responding. The good news is that nothing on the car has actually failed — the fob still contains a passive transponder chip that the car can read at point-blank range. This guide walks an NX owner through starting the engine and unlocking the doors when the key fob is dead, then through swapping the coin cell so the problem does not come back.

Start the NX with a dead fob battery
The first-generation NX (whether NX 200t, NX 300, or NX 300h hybrid) reads the key’s chip through a short-range antenna built into the START/STOP switch. Do this:
- Sit in the driver’s seat with the doors closed and press the brake pedal firmly (in the NX 300h hybrid, press the brake; there is no separate clutch).
- Hold the smart key so the chromed Lexus “L” emblem faces the ENGINE START STOP button.
- Touch the emblem side of the fob directly against the button. The car energises the transponder and you should hear a confirmation beep, and the indicator near the button changes.
- Immediately, with your foot still on the brake, press the START STOP button as normal. The system “READY” light (hybrid) or engine should start.
If it does not catch the first time, reposition the fob flat against the button and try again — the antenna sweet spot is small.
Unlock the doors with the mechanical key
Because the dead fob will not trigger the door handle sensors, you get inside mechanically:
- On the back of the smart key, slide the small release latch and pull out the hidden metal emergency key blade.
- Go to the driver’s door. On the NX the keyhole sits under a small cover at the rear edge of the door handle — use the blade tip to prise the cover off.
- Insert the blade and turn to unlock the door, then open it. The alarm may sound; it stops once you touch the fob to the start button and switch the car to ON.
- Reinsert the metal blade back into the smart key so you do not lose it.
Why touching the fob to the button works
The Smart Access fob holds a passive immobiliser chip that needs no power of its own — it is woken by a magnetic field. The START/STOP button on the NX contains a small induction antenna; when you hold the emblem against it, that field powers the chip just long enough for the car to confirm the correct key is present. That is why the trick works even with a completely flat coin cell, and it is the same backup the Lexus owner’s manual describes.
Replace the smart key battery
The NX Z1 smart key uses a single CR2032 lithium coin cell (confirm the marking on the old cell — some Lexus keys take a CR1632). To replace it:
- Slide out the metal emergency key as above.
- Insert a coin or small flat-blade screwdriver into the slot the blade left and gently twist to split the two halves of the case.
- Lift out the old CR2032, noting the “+” side faces up toward the back cover.
- Press in the new cell, click the case back together, and reinsert the metal key.
- Test that the lock/unlock buttons and proximity sensing now work before relying on them.
A fresh coin cell typically lasts one to two years. If the warning “key battery low” appears on the multi-information display, change it promptly.
Frequently Asked Questions
Where is the keyhole on the NX driver’s door? It is hidden under a removable cap at the back of the driver’s door handle. Pop the cap with the metal blade to reach the lock.
Will the alarm go off when I unlock manually? It can. Touching the fob to the START/STOP button and switching the car to ON clears it.
Which battery does the NX 2014–2021 key take? Most take a CR2032; a few Lexus smart keys use a CR1632. Always check the marking on the cell you remove.
My NX is a 300h hybrid — is the procedure different? No. Touch the fob to the button, press the brake, and press START; the system shows READY instead of cranking an engine.
How long can I drive after the touch-start? Normally; the start is one-time. But the doors still will not respond to the dead fob, so replace the coin cell as soon as you can.
