Home/Mazda/3/Mk3 (BM/BN) 2013-2018/Replace the Cabin Air Filter

Replace the Cabin Air Filter

Reviewed by the Service Reset editor · Updated October 4, 2026 · How we verify

These instructions apply to the Mazda 3 Mk3 (BM/BN) 2013-2018.

The cabin air filter (pollen filter) cleans the air coming into your Mazda 3 (BM/BN) through the heater and air-conditioning. A clogged filter weakens airflow, fogs the windows and causes a musty smell. On this generation the filter sits behind the glovebox, and changing it is a simple DIY job that takes about ten minutes with no tools.

Where Is the Cabin Filter?

It lives in a slot in the heater housing directly behind the glovebox, on the passenger side. You reach it by lowering the glovebox out of the way — there is no need to remove the whole box.

How to Replace the Cabin Filter

  1. Open the glovebox and empty it.
  2. Release the glovebox so it drops down: free the small stopper/damper arm on the right side, then squeeze the two sides of the box inwards to unclip the stop tabs and let it swing fully down.
  3. Behind it you’ll see the filter cover. Unclip it and slide it out.
  4. Pull out the old filter, noting the airflow arrow printed on its frame (it points down, toward the blower).
  5. Slide the new filter in the same way up, with the airflow arrow pointing the same direction.
  6. Refit the cover, lift the glovebox back up and re-engage the clips and the stopper arm.

How Often Should It Be Changed?

Every 12 months or so, or around every 15,000–20,000 km. Change it more often if you drive in dusty or heavy-traffic conditions, or sooner if airflow has dropped or there’s a smell from the vents.

Frequently Asked Questions

Where is the cabin filter on a Mazda 3?

Behind the glovebox, in a slot in the heater box. Lower the glovebox and the filter cover is right behind it — no tools needed.

Which way does the cabin filter go in?

Follow the airflow arrow printed on the filter frame; on the Mazda 3 it points downward, toward the blower. Fitting it the wrong way reduces airflow.

Do I need to remove the whole glovebox?

No. Releasing the damper arm and squeezing the sides lets the glovebox drop far enough to reach the filter cover; you don’t have to unbolt it.
