Turn Off the i-stop Start-Stop System

These instructions apply to the Mazda 3 Mk3 (BM/BN) 2013-2018. For other models, please choose your vehicle here.

The i-stop automatic stop/start system on the Mazda 3 Mk3 (BM/BN, 2013–2018) switches the engine off when you stop and restarts it as you pull away. It trims fuel use in town, but many owners find it intrusive in traffic. This guide shows how to turn i-stop off on a Mazda 3, and why the car re-enables it every drive.

How i-stop Works on the Mazda 3

The system only stops the engine when a set of conditions is met: the car is stationary, the engine is warm, the battery is well charged, the climate demand is satisfied, and you have the brake held (auto) or are in neutral with the clutch up (manual). On a cold morning or with the climate working hard it may do nothing — that is the system behaving as designed. Mazda’s i-stop restarts unusually quickly because it fires the engine using direct injection.

How to Turn It Off — The i-stop Button

  1. With the engine running, find the i-stop button — on the Mazda 3 it is on the dash, marked “i-stop” (with an “A”).
  2. Press the button once.
  3. The light in the button changes to show the system is off, and the engine will idle normally at a standstill.

Press the button again to switch i-stop back on.

Why It Comes Back On Every Drive

The button only disables i-stop for the current drive cycle. Switch the ignition off and on and the Mazda 3 re-enables it by default, because it counts toward the official emissions figures. There is no menu setting to make “off” permanent — a lasting change requires recoding with a Mazda-capable diagnostic tool, at your own risk.

i-stop Stopped Working? Check These First

  • Battery state of charge low — the most common reason; i-stop needs a healthy battery.
  • Battery replaced but not registered — the system keeps it disabled until the battery is set up.
  • Engine or cabin not yet at temperature — climate demand keeps the engine running.
  • A stored fault — a battery-management or engine code can disable i-stop silently. Check what a code means on autodtcs.com.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I permanently disable i-stop on a Mazda 3 without coding?

No — the button only lasts for the current drive. A permanent default change requires recoding with a Mazda diagnostic tool.

I fitted a new battery and now i-stop won’t work — why?

i-stop needs a healthy, correctly set-up battery. After a battery change the system may need the battery state relearned over some driving, or set up with a tool.

Is it bad for the engine to keep restarting?

No. i-stop uses direct-injection restart and is designed for frequent cycling; the system blocks auto-stop until the engine is warm.

Why won’t my car stop the engine at lights?

Usually the battery isn’t charged enough, or the engine/cabin isn’t at temperature. Those conditions must be met before i-stop acts.

If a low battery is the cause, our Mazda 3 battery disconnect/reconnect guide covers replacing and resetting it.
